Types of Fishing on Florida’s Forgotten Coast

Thanks to the unique topography of the Apalachicola River and Bay systems, combined with our area’s prime location on the Gulf coast, Franklin County is home to diverse, highly productive marine habitats. From inshore to offshore, freshwater and saltwater, anglers can enjoy various types of fishing on the Forgotten Coast.

When you plan your fishing trip to the Forgotten Coast, you can choose from an array of fishing types: from inshore fishing in the Apalachicola Bay and the fruitful grass flats of St. George Sound to freshwater fishing further inland to offshore fishing in the productive Gulf of Mexico.

Take your pick from a variety of fishing hotspots, including the Apalachicola River basin, the estuary system, wetlands, four barrier islands, oyster bars, sand flats, seagrass flats and active artificial reefs in the Gulf of Mexico. There countless types of fishing here in Franklin County.

Want to plan a bay fishing excursion? Wade, paddle or motor out into the Apalachicola Bay, St. George Sound or Ochlockonee Bay, where you’ll have a chance to land redfish, speckled trout, flounder, grouper, tripletail, black drum, pompano, Spanish mackerel and more. When you’re ready to hook into saltwater species, it’s time to head offshore from Carrabelle, Alligator Point, St. George Island or anywhere else on the Franklin County coast for some deep sea fishing.  The prolific Gulf waters around the Forgotten Coast are teeming with grouper, mackerel, snapper, hogfish, tripletail, amberjack, cobia, mahi mahi, blackfin tuna, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, jack crevalle, wahoo and more!
