AAHS Spring Speaker Series: Beloved local James Hargrove as Augustus Bowles
New AAHS Director will entertain us with the tales of "local pirate" William Augustus Bowles. In his short but adventure-packed life, Bowles was shipwrecked on St. George Island in 1799. He was rescued by a British surveyor working in the area. He formed with local Indian tribes the "State of Muskogee" and declared war against Spain in 1800. His exploits against Spain were instrumental in the issue of the land grant known as the Fores Purchase.

AAHS Spring Speaker Series: Early Apalachicola Maps Lecture
Lecture will be presented by Peter Cowdrey speaking about Early Maps of Apalachicola from the Cognetta Family Trust Collection. This lecture will be held in partnership with the Carrabelle History Museum, and is likely to take place in Carrabelle at C-Quarters (to be determined). Maps will be on display at the Raney House Museum, 128 Market Street, Apalachicola, for a couple of weeks after the event.

AAHS Spring Speaker Series: Margo Springfield Historic Cemetery Preservation
Rescheduled from 2020: Margo Springfield from the University of West Florida will discuss Historic Cemetery Preservation, with focus on Chestnut Cemetery in Apalachicola. Margo Springfield has worked extensively on historic cemetery preservation in Pensacola, and will bring her expertise to us, for work on the historic Chestnut Street Cemetery in Apalachicola.

AAHS Spring Speaker Series: Debe Beard of “A Glance at the Past” Heritage Plants & “Slave Gardens”
Debe Beard's acclaimed "Glance at the Past" series has been heard and loved by residents and visitors alike for years. Her new passion as a Master Gardener has gotten her involved with the Chapman Botanical Garden, at the Orman House State Park in Apalachicola. Ever the historian, she has been researching plants historically grown in this area. The AAHS is pleased that she has agreed to share some of this research with us.
