US Country Wildflowers
Born in Monterrey, California, Roxanne Shields was raised on military bases across the US and around the world, including Georgia, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Maryland, Germany, Spain, and Greece. She earned a BA in Fine Arts from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where she won the Alumni Association Governor’s Cup Yacht Racing poster contest twice.
After graduating, Roxanne interned as a graphic artist in Baltimore and worked as a designer in the Baltimore/Washington metro area. Following the birth of her daughter, Michelle, in 1990, she freelanced as a graphic designer and later taught art to grades 1-12 for five years. She then secured a major graphic design position in Washington D.C.
In 2004, Roxanne retired and moved to West Virginia, where she became active in the arts community. She served on the Board of the Arts and Humanities Alliance of Jefferson County and exhibited her work in juried shows at Montpelier Mansion and with the WV Watercolor Society. Roxanne owned Shepherdstown Paint & Art framing shop/U.S. Country Wildflowers Art Gallery until 2016.
Now residing in Eastpoint, Florida with her husband, Roxanne continues to sell her artwork and remains passionate about the arts. She sells her artwork at The Pearl Gallery in Apalachicola, Florida and on Etsy where she is a regularly star seller. Interestingly, in 2024, she was offered a copyright deal with country singer/songwriter, Jason Byrd, where her painting “Oyster City Brewery, Apalachicola, FL” is prominent on the back of his merchandise sport fishing shirts regarding his popular song “Gulf Coastin”.

Roxanne created the watercolor painting of “The Governor Stone”, a historic Florida schooner, 23”x23” for GZ Art Co. in October, 2024. It will be housed in the Earls Las Olas in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
Roxanne enjoys creating watercolor paintings that celebrate American country homes and rural locations. Her subjects include flowers, fields, pets, farm animals, and landscapes, such as barns, old buildings, churches, and courthouses. She has painted several pictures of cups and buckets full of freshly picked bouquets and terra cotta pots occupied with greenery. “Lavender,” a popular seller, depicts violet flowers and green stems tied together with a blue ribbon. Many of her paintings display sunny fields of wildflowers such as daisies, goldenrod, poppies, or other sunny blossoms and rustic country objects. Local landmark paintings are her best sellers. Roxanne uses contrasting colors to give her subjects vitality. She uses high-quality materials, such as Winsor & Newton® Watercolor paint, Arches® Cold Press Watercolor paper, and Kolinsky® Sable hair paint brushes so her artwork will be crisp, fresh representations of the American countryside.
