Three Servicemen Statue South

The Three Soldiers Bronze detail in Apalachicola is the focal point of the  Veteran’s Memorial Plaza in Apalachicola and is adjacent to the Chapman Botanical Garden and the Orman House Historic State Park.  The statue is actually a detail of the original Three Servicemen Statue located on the grounds of the National Monument in Washington, D.C. The bronze detail is the only copy made from the original by American master sculptor Frederick Hart.  Hart’s heroic bronze statue “Three Soldiers”, at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, was dedicated by President Ronald Reagan in 1984.  Hart expressed the desire before he died in 1999 to have a few replicas in other places around the country, so more people could see this iconic work.  Only one partial replica was ever made and it resides in Apalachicola overlooking the Apalachicola River.

The Apalachicola detail of the famous sculpture came about as the result of a friendship between Vietnam veteran Jan Scruggs, who, in 1979, is credited with establishing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.  and his longtime Apalachicola friend and Vietnam combat Sargeant Jimmy Mosconis. During a visit to Apalachicola in 2000,  Scruggs asked his old sergeant if he wanted the first copy of the Three Servicemen statue in Apalachicola. From there the Three Servicemen Statue South nonprofit was formed and today the memorial is an Apalachicola treasured landmark.

Veteran’s Park is located at 230 Market Street in Apalachicola. It is open year-round.
