plein air painting of the water and boats

Franklin County is host to several art events and festivals each spring and although most have cancelled, some painting events have moved their activities online to promote the beauty and culture of the region.

Forgotten Coast en Plein Air

The 10-day Forgotten Coast en Plein Air event, originally scheduled for March 20-29 has officially been postponed until later this year but organizers say the event’s slate of internationally renowned artists have been busy hosting online art workshops, demonstrations and exhibits of work. The Forgotten Coast en Plein Air is a 10-day event held each March featuring artists at work, a Quickdraw competition, exhibits, a Wetroom open to the public, workshops, socials, lectures and opportunities to purchase original works of art. The invitational features 20 internationally acclaimed artists, and 6 featured Florida artists as Plein Air Ambassadors. This year’s digital event features the first ever “Virtual Quickdraw”. Online demonstrations, exhibits and workshops are posted daily on the event’s social media channels. A virtual wetroom of this year’s artwork is online at www.forgottencoastenpleinair.com.

Plein Air South

Plein Air South is a gathering of the Southeast plein air community for an intense five days of  painting and workshops. The event was originally scheduled for March 30 – April 3 to follow the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air event but has been rescheduled for September 27-October 1.

St. George Island Paint Out

A separate painting event, the St. George Island Paint Out, scheduled for May did not want to give up celebrating art and artists. So, event organizers decided to continue the celebration of plein air painting and workshops online. According to event organizers, this year’s “Paint In” will feature 12 professional national and international artists painting scenes from their stay-in-place locations, with online videos of the artists at work, online voting for favorite paintings, and online sales. The St. George Island Paint Out event details are available online here.
