The January full moon is called the Wolf moon because wolves often hunt at night and the howling of wolves could be heard outside Indian villages.  As such\, their howling became associated with nightfall and particularly\, the moon amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter. Thus\, the name for January’s full moon. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive.  Parking is available in lots on either side of the park.

SUMMARY:Sunset and Full Moon Climb at Cape St. George Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The October Sunset and Full Moon Climb at the Cape St. George Lighthouse on St. George Island will be held on Wednesday\, October 20\, 2021. For more information\, please contact the Lighthouse Gift Shop at 850-927-7745. \nThe sun will set at 7:03 p.m. and the “Hunter’s” moon will rise at 7:21 p.m. on October 20. This full Moon is often referred to as the Full Hunter’s Moon\, Blood Moon\, or Sanguine Moon. Many moons ago\, Native Americans named this bright moon for obvious reasons. The leaves are falling from trees\, the deer are fattened\, and it is time to begin storing up meat for the long winter ahead. Because the fields were traditionally reaped in late September or early October\, hunters could easily see foxes and other animals that come out to glean from the fallen grains. Probably because of the threat of winter looming close\, the Hunter’s Moon is generally accorded with special honor\, historically serving as an important feast day in both Western Europe and among many Native American tribes. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Parking is available in lots at either side of the park.

SUMMARY:Grand Re-Opening and Ribbon Cutting of the Cape St. George Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The St. George Lighthouse Association (SGLA) along with the Apalachicola Bay Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand re-opening of the Cape St. George Lighthouse. \nThe Lighthouse has been closed for the month of January to complete a significant restoration project – the largest restoration project since the lighthouse was originally reconstructed at the center of St. George Island in 2008. The lantern room cage was suffering with extensive rust and cracked glass panes and the masonry tower was in need of some TLC. Specialized contractors mitigated the lantern room cage of rust and painted the cage with a three-step industrial coating. Additionally\, the masonry tower was cleaned and painted and all the glass windows in the lantern room were replaced\, offering a clear panoramic view of the Island. \nSGLA is a non-profit Florida corporation organized to preserve\, maintain and promote the Cape St. George Lighthouse. Funds raised by SGLA are used for the on-going maintenance and enhancement of the Lighthouse\, the Keeper’s House and Lighthouse Park.

SUMMARY:Virtual Full Moon Climb
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be going live from the top of the lighthouse for a virtual sunset/full moon climb. We hope you’ll join us on Facebook to view the sunset and moon rise. The October full moon is called the Halloween Hunter’s Blue Moon. It is called the Hunter’s Moon because Native American tribes began hunting when the deer had fattened themselves over the course of the summer\, and hunters tracked and killed prey by autumn moonlight\, stockpiling food for the coming winter. It will also be a Blue Moon as it is the second full moon in October\, giving it that designation. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. (weather permitting – if it’s not too cloudy or rainy)

SUMMARY:Virtual Full Moon Climb
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Facebook live for a virtual full moon climb – The October full moon is often referred to as the Full Hunter’s Moon\, Blood Moon\, or Sanguine Moon. Many moons ago\, Native Americans named this bright moon for obvious reasons. The leaves are falling from trees\, the deer are fattened\, and it’s time to begin storing up meat for the long winter ahead. Because the fields were traditionally reaped in late September or early October\, hunters could easily see fox and other animals that come out to glean from the fallen grains. Probably because of the threat of winter looming close\, the Hunter’s Moon is generally accorded with special honor\, historically serving as an important feast day in both Western Europe and among many Native American tribes. The Cape

SUMMARY:Full Moon Climb
DESCRIPTION:The March Full Moon Climb at the Cape St. George Lighthouse on St. George Island will be held on Monday\, March 9\, 2020. The Sunset/Full Moon Climb will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and will include light refreshments. Cost is $15.00 for the general public and $10.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. \nThe sun will set at 7:45 p.m. and the “Worm” moon will rise at 7:56 p.m. on March 9th. The March full moon is called the Worm moon because as the snows melt and the ground thaws\, earthworms begin to appear and the robins of spring are not far behind. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. \nAfter sunset\, people are invited to climb to the top of the lighthouse for a breathtaking view of the full moon\, as space and time permit. Cost is $10.00 for the general public and $5.00 for SGLA members. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Parking is available in lots at either side of the park. \nBecause space is limited\, reservations are recommended. For reservations or more information\, please contact the Lighthouse Gift Shop at (850) 927-7745.
