This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, May 6 and be on display at the museum until Saturday\, May 31.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. The museum will also be open special hours on Sunday\, May 25 and Monday\, May 26\, 12 pm to 4 pm to honor Memorial Day. Admission is free\, though donations are gladly accepted. \nThe exhibit will present the military and civilian efforts that led to the liberation of Paris on August 25\, 1944\, after four years of German occupation. The liberation was a turning point in World War II\, involving the strategic efforts of the Allied Forces\, Free French forces\, and the French Resistance. As Allied troops advanced through France following the D-Day invasion\, the citizens of Paris\, led by resistance fighters\, initiated an uprising against the occupying German forces. The Allies initially did not consider Paris to be a priority at first\, but the push by the French\, who felt the need for this symbolic city to be cleared of Germans\, changed their mind. \nSupreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered the intervention of the Free French 2nd Armored Division\, led by General Philippe Leclerc\, alongside the U.S. 4th Infantry Division. After intense fighting and the strategic surrender of German forces under General Dietrich von Choltitz\, Paris was officially freed on August 25\, 1944. \nThe exhibit features compelling historical photographs and firsthand accounts from soldiers in the U.S. 4th Infantry Division – one of the first American units to enter Paris. Known as the “Ivy Division\,” the 4th played a crucial role in the D-Day landings at Utah Beach and the subsequent campaign across Nazi-occupied France. Their dramatic entry into Paris along with the French 2nd Armored Division marked a defining moment in the war. The 4th Infantry were trained in amphibious assault at Camp Gordon Johnston. The Dice Run will take place immediately following the Camp Gordon Johnston Veterans Parade and is a much-needed fundraiser to support the missions of both Camp Gordon Johnston Museum and American Legion Post 82. The funds raised are used to share the stories of those who served at Camp Gordon Johnston and in WWII and to honor all our military veterans. \nParticipants will enjoy a leisurely ride or drive along the Forgotten Coast on scenic US Highway 98\, stopping at several fun locations to roll dice at each. At the end of the day\, those with the highest and the lowest combined dice rolls will win prizes. All types of vehicles are welcome. If it’s legal to operate on a Florida highway\, it can be entered. Alston was the first African American supervisor for the Works Progress Administration’s (WPA) Federal Art Project.and he created the iconic bust of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\, which resides in the Oval Office. During WWII he also served as a member of the Office of War Information. \nDuring World War II\, Alston created motivational posters and illustrations aimed at African American audiences\, highlighting topics such as conserving resources\, growing victory gardens\, and supporting the war effort through unity and action. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nOperation Market Garden (September 17th – 27th\, 1944) was the attempt to establish control of the bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem on the border of Germany and the Netherlands. This involved the combined efforts of the First Allied Airborne and the XXX Corps of the British 2nd Army. The battle was unsuccessful for a variety of reasons\, including the dependence on a single raised highway the ground forces had to use to link up with airborne troops (US\, British and Polish) dropped at the three bridges. \nThis exhibit presents the military commanders from both the Allied and the German forces\, and presents information of the Horsa and Waco gliders\, as well as the Douglas C47 Skytrain aircraft used to bring troops and equipment from England. \nThe battle was commemorated in “A Bridge Too Far”\, the 1977 film.  “Band of Brothers”\, a miniseries from HBO in 2001\, also depicted the 101st Airborne’s part in this battle. A collection of artifacts will help portray the bravery and sacrifice of the Mighty Eighth. This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, July 23 and be on display until Saturday\, August 31.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nThe Eighth Air Force was the greatest air armada in history\, reaching peak strength of over 200\,000 personnel by mid-1944. In just three years\, the Eighth completed over 440\,000 bomber sorties dropping almost 700\,000 tons of bombs\, and 11\,200 aerial victories. They destroyed the German Luftwaffe\, and also destroyed Nazi Germany’s ability to wage war. These efforts paved the way for the D-Day assault. . \nThese accomplishments came with a price; the Eighth suffered nearly half of the U.S. Army Air Force’s casualties\, including more than 26\,000 dead. The servicemen of the Eighth earned 17 Medals of Honor (the highest military decoration)\, 220 Distinguished Service Crosses and many other awards. The battle started with the capture of the Kerama Islands by the 77th infantry Division on March 26\, 1945\, and ended 98 days later on July 2. This effort involved three marine divisions and four infantry divisions making up the Tenth Army\, which had its own tactical air force\, and was supported by naval and amphibious commands. The battle cost more lives on both sides than any other campaign in the Pacific. The taking of Okinawa provided a base from which Operation Downfall\, the invasion of the Japanese mainland\, was to be launched. Operation Downfall\, of course\, was made unnecessary by the surrender of Japan in September of 1945. Included in the exhibit will be historic photos and Marine Corps artifacts. \nThis exhibit will open Thursday\, April 30 1 at 11 am and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, June 1 at 5 pm. There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted. \nNational K9 Veterans Day\, March 13\, is a day set aside to recognize and honor the service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs. Dogs served in many capacities in wartime\, including in WWII\, as messengers and sentry dogs\, but did you know that they were also trained for mine and explosive detection\, finding injured soldiers and flushing enemy troops from hidden spaces? Dogs’ keen sense of smell and acute hearing made them valuable assets in war and today for national security. This exhibit will recognize the important service that they loyally performed during WWII. \nDuring WWII\, the press was essential for keeping the public informed in wartime\, but cartoonists and cartoons played a unique role in bringing the war to citizens. The cartoon figure and possibly America’s earliest meme\, Kilroy\, is actually engraved on the WWII Memorial in the National Mall in Washington DC.  Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will share images of familiar characters like Private Snafu\, Donald Duck\, Willie and Joe\, and Kilroy who all play a prominent part in WWII history. The exhibit will also present the works of cartoonists like Bill Maudlin and Dave Breger\, as well as the animated works by Disney and Warner Brothers that served as both propaganda for citizens and training for servicemen. The focus of the exhibit will be on the Battle of Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge from the 4th Infantry Division perspective.  This exhibit will open Tuesday\, January 2 and be on display until Saturday\, January 27.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission. \nThe longest continuous battle ever fought by American forces lasted from September 19 to December 16\, 1944 over control of the Hürtgen Forest\, essential to the German plans for their upcoming Ardennes Offensive (which would be known to the Allies as the “Battle of the Bulge”). This small patch of land\, 54 square miles located three miles east of the Germany / Belgium Border\, would end up being extremely costly to the Allies despite a five to one advantage. This battle was somewhat forgotten because of the more famous Battle of the Bulge but it was a bloody and memorable experience for those that fought there. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum will present these two campaigns from the perspective of the 4th Infantry Division\, also known as the Ivy Division\, which received their amphibious training at Camp Gordon Johnston and landed on D Day at Utah Beach. The Museum has received both financial and historical assistance from the National 4th Infantry Division Association and Division Past President and Historian Bob Babcock. The failures of US Intelligence in December of 1941 to anticipate the Pearl Harbor attack were replaced by the huge success in identifying Midway as Japan’s next target. The destruction of many of the Japanese ships that carried out the Pearl Harbor attack was a much needed boost for US morale. In addition\, this exhibit will cover how many of these ships have recently been discovered thanks to 21st century technology. Their power and menace are still visible in the images taken of them almost 80 years after their demise. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nIn August of 1945\, an atomic bomb was dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and then Nagasaki. Much has been debated about the decision to develop and use atomic weapons\, but historians generally agree that Germany\, Japan\, and the Soviet Union were well on their way to developing their own\, and both the Allies and the Japanese predicted that the invasion of the Japanese Homeland would have costs millions of lives on both sides. \nOn August 14\, 1945\, the Japanese surrendered without qualifications to the U.S. and preparations began for an official surrender and the end of World War II. On September 2\, the formal surrender documents were signed. This day is celebrated as Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) in the U.S. \nThis special exhibit commemorates the anniversary of the two bombings that brought WWII to a close. It will explore what made these bombs so destructive\, and how they were kept secret. Also displayed are artifacts relevant to the surrender\, souvenirs from Japan\, photos of post-war Japan and more. Visitors can use a Geiger counter to measure the radioactivity of samples of uraninite and trinitite\, and see vintage film of the aftermath of the bombs in Japan. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nBeginning in 1933\, the German Government established prison\, labor\, concentration\, and extermination camps throughout their territories\, including in countries they occupied before and during the war. The arrested and detained groups included Roma\, Communists\, Jehovah’s Witnesses\, homosexuals\, the disabled\, and especially Jews. Some 12 million people perished in the more than 44\,000 facilities\, ghettos\, and killing fields across Europe\, including 6 million Jews. The Museum acknowledges the need for all citizens to understand this dark period of history\, what caused it\, who perpetrated it\, and how some resisted and fought their captors. Eyewitnesses such as survivors and the soldiers that liberated these camps are aging and dying\, but many have told their stories. Visitors are invited to see this sobering exhibit and help our society remember those victims of atrocity\, prejudice\, and hate. \nThe internationally recognized date for Holocaust Remembrance Day corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar. It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Dogs served in many capacities in wartime\, including in WWII\, as messengers and sentry dogs. However\, did you know that they were also trained for mine and explosive detection\, finding injured soldiers\, and flushing enemy troops from hidden spaces? Dogs’ keen sense of smell and acute hearing made them valuable assets in war and today for national security. This exhibit will recognize the important service that they loyally performed during WWII. \nDuring WWII\, the press was essential for keeping the public informed in wartime\, but cartoonists and cartoons played a unique role in bringing the war to citizens. The cartoon figure and possibly America’s earliest meme\, Kilroy\, is actually engraved on the WWII Memorial in the National Mall in Washington\, DC.  Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will share images of familiar characters like Private Snafu\, Donald Duck\, Willie and Joe\, and Kilroy\, who all play a prominent part in WWII history. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nOperation Watchtower\, which was the campaign in the Solomon Islands\, including the effort to control Guadalcanal (Aug 1942- Feb 1943) was the first offensive campaign against the Japanese in WWII. By mid 1942 the Japanese empire controlled a vast area of the Pacific Ocean and planned a large airfield on Guadalcanal\, which would have presented a direct risk to the supply route between the US and the Eastern coast of Australia\, interfering with plans to use Australia as a staging point for operations against New Guinea and against the huge Japanese base at Rabaul in the New Britain Islands. The Guadalcanal Campaign\, in conjunction with the Battle of Midway (June 1942)\, is considered a turning point in the war and a key to eventual victory over the Japanese. This exhibit will be on display at the museum from Tuesday\, September 6 until Saturday\, October 1.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nOperation Market Garden (September 17th – 27th\, 1944) was the attempt to establish control of the bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem on the border of Germany and the Netherlands. This involved the combined efforts of the First Allied Airborne and the XXX Corps of the British 2nd Army. The battle was unsuccessful for a variety of reasons\, including the dependence on a single raised highway the ground forces had to use to link up with airborne troops (US\, British and Polish) dropped at the three bridges. \nThis exhibit presents the military commanders from both the Allied and the German forces\, and presents information of the Horsa and Waco gliders\, as well as the Douglas C47 Skytrain aircraft used to bring troops and equipment from England. \nThe battle was commemorated in the 1977 film\, “A Bridge Too Far”.  “Band of Brothers”\, a miniseries from HBO in 2001\, also depicted the 101st Airborne’s part in this battle. This exhibit will be on display at the museum from Tuesday\, July 12 until Saturday\, September 3. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nOperation Torch (8 Nov 1942) was the first of several campaigns by the Allies in North Africa\, the first large Allied invasion in which the American military participated. It was also the first American airborne operation. North Africa saw the rise of the influence of General George Patton\, and his innovative use of tank warfare. Although the June 6\, 1944 Normandy Invasion is considered to be the iconic amphibious operation\, these tactics were already in use in North Africa. A unit from Camp Gordon Johnston\, the 61st Medical\, was deployed as part of Operation Torch with the First Engineers Special Brigade\, before Camp Gordon Johnston was even fully operational. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West\, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred in 1942-1943. The Camp Gordon Johnston Dice Run will take place immediately following the CGJ Veterans Parade and is a much-needed fundraiser to support the museum’s mission. The funds raised by this event are used to preserve the heritage of the men and women who trained at Camp Gordon Johnston\, to share the stories of those who served in WWII\, as well as honor all our military veterans. \nDuring this fun event\, participants will drive along beautiful coastline US Highway 98 to various checkpoints\, rolling dice at each one. At the end of the day\, participants with the highest and with the lowest combined rolls win prizes. All types of vehicles are welcome to participate. Registration for the Dice Run will be open from 12:00-1:30 PM at Camp Gordon Johnston Museum\, 1873 US Hwy 98\, Carrabelle\, FL directly across from Carrabelle Beach Public Park. The run will conclude by 4:30 PM at American Legion Post #82 in Lanark. Prizes will be awarded for high and low rollers\, door prizes\, and 50-50 raffles. The ticket cost for this event is $15.00 for the rider/driver and $5.00 for each passenger and includes one dice card and great food at the last stop. \nGuests are urged to come to Carrabelle before the Dice Run to enjoy the Veterans Parade either as a participant or a spectator. The parade\, which honors and recognizes military veterans and active-duty military\, will start Saturday\, March 12 at 10:45 AM along US Hwy 98 in downtown Carrabelle. Dogs’ keen sense of smell and acute hearing made them valuable assets in war and today for national security. This exhibit will recognize the important service that they loyally performed during WWII. \nThe press was essential for keeping the public informed in wartime\, but cartoonists and cartoons played a unique role in bringing the war to citizens. Did you know that the cartoon figure and possibly America’s earliest meme\, Kilroy\, is actually engraved on the WWII Memorial in the National Mall in Washington D.C.? These are two of several Amphibious Truck Companies that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston during World War II. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, February 1\, 2022\, and be on display until Saturday\, February 26. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission. \nThe 476th Amphibious Truck Company trained at Camp Gordon Johnston and was deployed with the Marine Corps for the campaign on Iwo Jima. The 818th Amphibious Truck Company also trained at Camp Gordon Johnston and was deployed to Normandy. The members of the 818th also then spent part of the fall of 1944 driving for the Red Ball Express. \nRosters of WWII companies are very difficult to assemble\, and for Black units\, this is particularly challenging. Thanks to the family of the commanding officer of the 818th and the assistance of the National Archives\, partial rosters of both companies have been assembled. The volunteers and staff of the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will present what they know of these men who served their country with honor in a military that was still segregated. On August 6\, 1945\, the first atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima. A second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9. Much has been debated about the decision to develop and use atomic weapons\, but historians generally agree that Germany\, Japan\, and the Soviet Union were well on their way to developing their own\, and both the Allies and the Japanese predicted that the invasion of the Japanese Homeland (codenamed “Downfall”) would have cost millions of lives on both sides. \nThis exhibit will explore what made these bombs so destructive\, and how they were kept secret.  Come and learn about the people\, the places\, the science\, and the aftermath of this significant event that ended WWII. Explaining the Holocaust DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Holocaust Education Resource Council of Tallahassee\, Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is presenting a series of talks on the Holocaust at Camp Gordon Johnston Museum in Carrabelle. These public speaking events will feature Linda Davey\, Holocaust Historian\, and will coincide with the special exhibit on the Holocaust running July 1-August 14. \nThe Holocaust was the Nazi program to eliminate the Jews of Europe during their reign over Germany from 1933 until their defeat by the Allies in 1945. The Nazi party’s “Final Solution” led to the deaths of 12 million people between 1933 and 1945\, including political opponents\, Roma\, homosexuals\, communists\, and six million Jews\, including one million Jewish children. \nHolocaust Education Resource Council (HERC) is a non-profit 501-c3 in Tallahassee that provides instructional guidance\, support\, and resources for educators who teach the history of the Holocaust and their students\, and educational programs for the community at large about Holocaust education and teaching tolerance. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. Carrabelle Beach was the site of many practice beach assault landings. The amphibious training conducted at this site was planned to be the last step before shipping out to England. The exhibit will include historical photos and Marine Corps artifacts\, some of which were recently acquired. The battle started with the Kerama Islands’ capture by the 77th infantry Division on March 26\, 1945\, and ended 98 days later\, on July 2. This effort involved three marine divisions and four infantry divisions making up the Tenth Army\, which had its tactical air force\, and was supported by naval and amphibious commands. The battle cost more lives on both sides than any other campaign in the Pacific. The taking of Okinawa provided a base from which Operation Downfall\, the Japanese mainland invasion\, was to be launched. This exhibit will open Friday\, January 1\, 2021 at 11 am and will be on display at the museum until January 31 at 5 pm.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission. \nFrom November 1945 to October 1946 high ranking members of the German military and government were prosecuted for war crimes and crimes committed against humanity stemming from their actions before and during WWII. During the month of January the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will present an exhibit about the trials\, covering some of the more notorious defendants such as Hess\, Göring\, Döring\, Jodl and Keitel; the prosecutors\, the charges and the verdicts. This piece of hard working history will be on display at the museum on Saturday\, February 29\, from 11 am – 4 pm. The museum will also be screening a movie on the Red Ball Express at 1 pm. \nAfter D-Day\, the Allied military forces made a critical push from Normandy across France. Supply lines were soon stretched to their breaking point. Without ammunition\, fuel and food\, the US Army would have soon been at a standstill. A huge trucking effort called the “Red Ball Express” was created and played a key role in the defeat of the Nazis. Nearly 75 percent of all Red Ball Express drivers were African American. \nThis unique event will close out Camp Gordon Johnston Museum’s month-long exhibit honoring the service of African American soldiers during WWII.
