SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Battle of Iwo Jima
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit about the Battle of Iwo Jima. This exhibit will open Friday\, March 6 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, March 28\, 2026. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm ET and there is no charge for admission. \nThe Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the most important and hardest-fought amphibious battles of World War II. From February 19 to March 26\, 1945\, American forces attacked the small\, heavily defended island to secure its airfields and use them to support bombing missions against Japan. Marines from the 3rd\, 4th\, and 5th Marine Divisions landed on narrow beaches under heavy artillery\, mortar\, and small arms fire and quickly faced fierce resistance. Japanese troops were dug into bunkers\, caves\, and tunnels\, making every step forward dangerous. The battle was one of the bloodiest in the Pacific\, with nearly 7\,000 Americans killed and many more wounded. After weeks of hard combat\, the island was secured and the famous flag raising on Mount Suribachi became a powerful symbol of courage and sacrifice. \nAlthough Marines led the assault\, many Army and Navy units played key support roles. The U.S. Army’s 147th Infantry Regiment helped clear the island\, and Navy Seabees repaired airfields so planes could quickly use them. Among them were several Amphibious Truck Companies—the 471st\, 473rd\, and 476th— that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston. Landing under fire\, they moved supplies\, carried ammunition\, rescued stranded equipment\, and evacuated wounded soldiers from the beaches using DUKW amphibious vehicles. These units served alongside the 4th Marine Division and took part in heavy fighting. Throughout the month\, the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will have a special exhibit commemorating the anniversary of the Iwo Jima Battle. Displays will include photos\, video\, and artifacts including some from the Marine Corps.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Honoring African American Servicemen
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit in recognition of Black History Month honoring  the service of African-American servicemembers in WWII. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, February 3\, 2026 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, February 28\, 2026. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm ET and there is no charge for admission. \nAfrican Americans served in large numbers during WWII despite being denied full rights as American citizens. They served in segregated units in both the Army and the Army Air Corps\, one of the most recognizable being the Tuskegee Airmen. Many African American soldiers trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in transportation units such as Amphibious Truck Companies\, where support units often worked close to combat and came under fire. \nAt Camp Gordon Johnston\, these Amphibious Truck Companies trained in the use of the amphibious truck known as the DUKW\, using the bay and sandy beaches in Carrabelle and all along the Forgotten Coast to practice operating\, loading and unloading these truly amphibious vehicles. The Museum continues its research into the units that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in Carrabelle and served in World War II including being part of the campaign on Iwo Jima. \nThis exhibit will share what has been uncovered about these servicemen who\, like many African Americans of the era\, served their country with honor in a still-segregated military and faced significant challenges along the way. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. For more information\, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Operation Husky\, the Invasion of Sicily
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit about Operation Husky\, the invasion of Sicily. This exhibit will be on display from Tuesday\, January 6\, 2026 until Saturday\, January 31\, 2026. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nOperation Husky was the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943\, devised in North Africa as the Allies drove German and Italian forces from the continent and prepared to advance into Italy. The campaign relied on a series of top-secret deceptions—fake units\, fabricated communications\, and the famed British Intelligence ploy known as Operation Mincemeat\, which persuaded Germany that Sicily was not the next target. It set in motion one of the largest combined operations of World War II\, involving nearly half a million Allied personnel. \nHighlights of this exhibit include a set of top-secret plans for the JOSS segment (3rd Infantry Division) amphibious landings near Licata\, Sicily\, along with details for CENT (Forty-fifth Division near Scoglitti\, Sicily) and DIME (1st Division near Gela\, Sicily)\, the other two American landing forces. This copy of the top-secret plans was printed just 20 days before the start of Operation Husky\, which involved amphibious landing of infantry and armor as well as parachute operations by the 82nd Airborne. It is also a secret as to why the museum holds this set of plans.

SUMMARY:Anniversary of Pearl Harbor and Christmas During the War
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits in the month of December. The focus of one exhibit will be on commemorating the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor and the focus of the other exhibit will be on exploring Christmas During the War. These two exhibits will open Tuesday\, December 2\, 2025 and be on display until Saturday\, January 3\, 2026.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm ET and there is no charge for admission. (Closed Thursday\, December 25 and  January 1.) \nIn honor of the Anniversary of Pearl Harbor\, Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is presenting an exhibit commemorating this dark day in America’s history. World War II came home for the United States on December 7\, 1941\, when the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan attacked the US Western Fleet at the American base Pearl Harbor\, Hawaii. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called it “a date which will live in infamy”. Learn about those that planned the attack\, the sole Japanese POW taken\, and the heroic efforts by Doris Miller of the USS West Virginia to shoot down attacking Japanese planes. This attack resulted in the declaration of war with Japan and the US entering World War II. Luckily\, the Pacific Fleet’s aircraft carriers were at sea on that day\, and escaped damage to fight later. “Remember Pearl Harbor” became the rallying cry of Americans as they enlisted by the thousands and built up the immense industrial effort needed to achieve victory in 1945. \nThe second special exhibit for this month will reflect on what Christmas was like during the war. Americans had to learn to do with less during the years they were fully engaged in fighting World War II. That had a significant impact on every aspect of American life including how Christmas was celebrated. Americans were encouraged to make their own toys and decorations\, and commercially-made gifts emphasized materials that were not needed for war\, including cloth\, paper and wood. For example the popular Lionel Train toys were converted to cardboard and people learned how to cook and bake with corn syrup once sugar became scarce. Learn more about how rationing changed toys\, food and even decorations during the war.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit Honoring Native American Servicemembers
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is excited to announce a special exhibit honoring Native American Servicemen\, opening Tuesday\, November 4 and on display until Saturday\, November 29\, 2025. November is National Native American Heritage Month\, and the museum salutes their service and sacrifice. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday\, 11 am to 5 pm ET with free admission. (Closed Thursday\, November 27 for Thanksgiving.) \n“During World War I and World War II\, hundreds of American Indians joined the United States armed forces and used words from their traditional tribal languages as weapons. The United States military asked them to develop secret battle communications based on their languages—and America’s enemies never deciphered the coded messages they sent. “Code Talkers\,” as they came to be known after World War II\, are twentieth-century American Indian warriors and heroes who significantly aided the victories of the United States and its allies. \nThe Code Talkers’ role in war required intelligence and bravery. They developed and memorized a special code. They endured some of the most dangerous battles and remained calm under fire. They served proudly\, with honor and distinction. Their actions proved critical in several important campaigns\, and they are credited with saving thousands of American and allies’ lives.” (Source: The National Museum of the American Indian). \nVisitors are invited to learn about the Native American Servicemembers\, including members of the Choctaw\, Navajo\, Cherokee\, Pima\, Comanche and other nations that served their country in World War II. Guests can discover the story of the Code Talkers\, who used their unbreakable code based on their native tongues to help defeat the enemy and the stories of the seven Native American Medal of Honor Recipients from WWII.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Operation Paperclip
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit about Operation Paperclip. This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, October 7 and be on display through Saturday\, November 1.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nOperation Paperclip was the secret US campaign to move German scientists\, some of whom had Nazi records of wrongdoing\, to the US to help develop the rocket technology for defense and eventually space exploration. Keeping these human assets out of the hands of the Soviet Union as the Cold War ramped up required turning a blind eye to their pasts as operatives in the Nazi Regime. These scientists\, led by Werner Von Braun\, were key to the success of the US missions into space. \nThis exhibit is a cooperative venture between the Museum and the Challenger Learning Center in Tallahassee. The Challenger Learning Center is the K-12 Outreach Facility for the Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering. Portions of this exhibit will be presented in November at the Challenger Learning Center located at 200 S. Duval Street in Tallahassee.

SUMMARY:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum: Philippines Campaign Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit on the Philippines campaign. This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, September 2 and be on display until Saturday\, October 4.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm ET. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nVisitors are invited to learn about the Japanese assault on the Philippines\, including the Bataan Death March\, a brutal forced march of Allied prisoners of war through tropical heat\, humidity\, and rain. Thousands died along the way due to being starved and beaten and being denied medical care. \nThe exhibit also explores the long campaign to liberate the islands\, starting with the U. S. landing at Leyte on October 20\, 1944. In an effort to hold Leyte at all costs\, Japan sent five naval forces to challenge the American fleet\, leading to the largest and most complex naval battle of World War II\, the massive Leyte Gulf Naval Campaign. \nThe 38th Infantry Division\, which trained at Camp Gordon Johnston\, earned the nickname “Avengers of Bataan”. This division played a critical role in this campaign. In December 1944\, they landed at Leyte under enemy fire with the battle still raging. In the spring of 1945\, they fought a tough campaign at Zig Zag Pass in Luzon. After intense combat\, the division had cleared Bataan and accepted the formal surrender of two of the most powerful Japanese army groups in the Philippines. General Douglas MacArthur is said to have personally honored them with the title “Avengers of Bataan” for their victory.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit on the Surrenders and End of World War II
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle will present a special exhibit on the end of World War II. This exhibit opens Tuesday\, July 15 and will be on display until Saturday\, August 30. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. Admission is free\, though donations are welcome. \nOn May 7\, 1945 Karl Donitz\, a naval admiral\, ardent Nazi\, and Hitler’s successor\, agreed to the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany’s armed forces to take effect the next day. The document of surrender was signed that day at Reims\, in northeastern France by General Alfred Jodl. On May 8\, people filled the streets in celebration and this day is known as Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day). \nOn August 14\, 1945\, the Japanese surrendered without qualifications to the U.S. and preparations began for an official surrender and the end of World War II. Earlier that month an atomic bomb had been dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and then Nagasaki. On September 2\, the formal surrender documents were signed on the decks of the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay. This day is celebrated as Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) in the United States. \nThis special exhibit commemorates the events that brought World War II to an end. It features a collection of artifacts related to the surrender\, including souvenirs from Japan\, photographs of post-war Japan\, and more. Highlights of the exhibit also include documents from the Nuremberg trials\, such as a vintage copy of Hitler’s will as well as occupation-era souvenirs from Germany and Japan\, and striking images of post-war Germany. Items that relate to the preparation for the invasion of Japan (thankfully unnecessary) will also be on display.

SUMMARY:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum Commemorates D-Day
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit Commemorating D-Day. This exhibit opens Tuesday\, June 3 and will be on display until Saturday\, July 12.  The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. Admission is free\, though donations are welcome. \nCamp Gordon Johnston was established in 1942 in Carrabelle to train entire infantry divisions\, including the U. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units\, in amphibious warfare. That training and the men who received it would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion\, the largest seaborne invasion in history\, included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThe exhibit will include personal papers\, historic photos\, and artifacts belonging to Capt. John E. Mellen\, generously shared by his family. Capt. Mellen commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and served with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in late 1943 and early 1944 before deploying to England in preparation for the Normandy invasion. On June 6\, 1944\, they landed on Utah Beach as part of the 1st Engineer Special Brigade\, supporting the 4th Infantry Division. For this the 818th received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm and five members received Bronze Stars. \nA video of amphibious assault training on Carrabelle Beach will play continuously during the day\, with a new showing every 10 minutes. This Army training short film\, captured by the U.S. Army Signal Corps\, documents the D-Day preparations as they happened in March 1943. Several well-known photographs of this training were taken from this footage. These exercises were to be the last training before troops shipped out to England. \nThe exhibit also features personal interviews with members of the 4th Infantry Division and accounts from German defenders. These\, along with other tributes to D-Day\, offer a more complete perspective on this historic event. The museum’s three WWII military vehicles will also be on display.

SUMMARY:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum Presents a Special Exhibit on the Liberation of Paris
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting an exhibit on the Liberation of Paris during World War II. This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, May 6 and be on display at the museum until Saturday\, May 31.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. The museum will also be open special hours on Sunday\, May 25 and Monday\, May 26\, 12 pm to 4 pm to honor Memorial Day. Admission is free\, though donations are gladly accepted. \nThe exhibit will present the military and civilian efforts that led to the liberation of Paris on August 25\, 1944\, after four years of German occupation. The liberation was a turning point in World War II\, involving the strategic efforts of the Allied Forces\, Free French forces\, and the French Resistance. As Allied troops advanced through France following the D-Day invasion\, the citizens of Paris\, led by resistance fighters\, initiated an uprising against the occupying German forces. The Allies initially did not consider Paris to be a priority at first\, but the push by the French\, who felt the need for this symbolic city to be cleared of Germans\, changed their mind. \nSupreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered the intervention of the Free French 2nd Armored Division\, led by General Philippe Leclerc\, alongside the U.S. 4th Infantry Division. After intense fighting and the strategic surrender of German forces under General Dietrich von Choltitz\, Paris was officially freed on August 25\, 1944. \nThe exhibit features compelling historical photographs and firsthand accounts from soldiers in the U.S. 4th Infantry Division – one of the first American units to enter Paris. Known as the “Ivy Division\,” the 4th played a crucial role in the D-Day landings at Utah Beach and the subsequent campaign across Nazi-occupied France. Their dramatic entry into Paris along with the French 2nd Armored Division marked a defining moment in the war. The 4th Infantry were trained in amphibious assault at Camp Gordon Johnston. This preparation proved vital throughout their combat operations. \nVisitors to the exhibit will gain insight into the soldiers’ experiences and the broader significance of their actions\, from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston to their role in liberating one of Europe’s most iconic cities.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Operation Market Garden at Camp Gordon Johnston
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit on Operation Market Garden. This exhibit will be on display at the museum from Tuesday\, October 1 until Saturday\, November 2.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nOperation Market Garden (September 17th – 27th\, 1944) was the attempt to establish control of the bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem on the border of Germany and the Netherlands. This involved the combined efforts of the First Allied Airborne and the XXX Corps of the British 2nd Army. The battle was unsuccessful for a variety of reasons\, including the dependence on a single raised highway the ground forces had to use to link up with airborne troops (US\, British and Polish) dropped at the three bridges. \nThis exhibit presents the military commanders from both the Allied and the German forces\, and presents information of the Horsa and Waco gliders\, as well as the Douglas C47 Skytrain aircraft used to bring troops and equipment from England. \nThe battle was commemorated in “A Bridge Too Far”\, the 1977 film.  “Band of Brothers”\, a miniseries from HBO in 2001\, also depicted the 101st Airborne’s part in this battle. They landed near Eindhoven and Veghel.

SUMMARY:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum Honors The Mighty Eighth
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit exploring the heroic history of the Eighth Air Force\, known as The Mighty Eighth. A collection of artifacts will help portray the bravery and sacrifice of the Mighty Eighth. This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, July 23 and be on display until Saturday\, August 31.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nThe Eighth Air Force was the greatest air armada in history\, reaching peak strength of over 200\,000 personnel by mid-1944. In just three years\, the Eighth completed over 440\,000 bomber sorties dropping almost 700\,000 tons of bombs\, and 11\,200 aerial victories. They destroyed the German Luftwaffe\, and also destroyed Nazi Germany’s ability to wage war. These efforts paved the way for the D-Day assault. . \nThese accomplishments came with a price; the Eighth suffered nearly half of the U.S. Army Air Force’s casualties\, including more than 26\,000 dead. The servicemen of the Eighth earned 17 Medals of Honor (the highest military decoration)\, 220 Distinguished Service Crosses and many other awards. Visitors are invited to come to the museum to learn more about these heroes. \nPhoto Credit: Two B-17 Flying Fortresses’ vapor trails light up the night sky over Eastern Europe. SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Battle for Okinawa
DESCRIPTION:Starting April 30 and lasting until June 1\, the Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum will present a special exhibit on the most violent and costliest campaign of WWII\, the battle to take Okinawa. The battle started with the capture of the Kerama Islands by the 77th infantry Division on March 26\, 1945\, and ended 98 days later on July 2. This effort involved three marine divisions and four infantry divisions making up the Tenth Army\, which had its own tactical air force\, and was supported by naval and amphibious commands. The battle cost more lives on both sides than any other campaign in the Pacific. The taking of Okinawa provided a base from which Operation Downfall\, the invasion of the Japanese mainland\, was to be launched. Operation Downfall\, of course\, was made unnecessary by the surrender of Japan in September of 1945. Included in the exhibit will be historic photos and Marine Corps artifacts. \nThis exhibit will open Thursday\, April 30 1 at 11 am and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, June 1 at 5 pm. There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Canine Military Veterans and Cartoonists in WWII
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits throughout the month of March – one to honor our country’s canine military veterans and the other to recognize the role of cartoonists in WWII.  These exhibits will open Tuesday\, March 5 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, March 30.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted. \nNational K9 Veterans Day\, March 13\, is a day set aside to recognize and honor the service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs. Dogs served in many capacities in wartime\, including in WWII\, as messengers and sentry dogs\, but did you know that they were also trained for mine and explosive detection\, finding injured soldiers and flushing enemy troops from hidden spaces? Dogs’ keen sense of smell and acute hearing made them valuable assets in war and today for national security. This exhibit will recognize the important service that they loyally performed during WWII. \nDuring WWII\, the press was essential for keeping the public informed in wartime\, but cartoonists and cartoons played a unique role in bringing the war to citizens. The cartoon figure and possibly America’s earliest meme\, Kilroy\, is actually engraved on the WWII Memorial in the National Mall in Washington DC.  Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will share images of familiar characters like Private Snafu\, Donald Duck\, Willie and Joe\, and Kilroy who all play a prominent part in WWII history. The exhibit will also present the works of cartoonists like Bill Maudlin and Dave Breger\, as well as the animated works by Disney and Warner Brothers that served as both propaganda for citizens and training for servicemen.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: The Battle of Hurtgen Forest & The Battle of the Bulge
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit in the month of January. The focus of the exhibit will be on the Battle of Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge from the 4th Infantry Division perspective.  This exhibit will open Tuesday\, January 2 and be on display until Saturday\, January 27.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission. \nThe longest continuous battle ever fought by American forces lasted from September 19 to December 16\, 1944 over control of the Hürtgen Forest\, essential to the German plans for their upcoming Ardennes Offensive (which would be known to the Allies as the “Battle of the Bulge”). This small patch of land\, 54 square miles located three miles east of the Germany / Belgium Border\, would end up being extremely costly to the Allies despite a five to one advantage. This battle was somewhat forgotten because of the more famous Battle of the Bulge but it was a bloody and memorable experience for those that fought there. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum will present these two campaigns from the perspective of the 4th Infantry Division\, also known as the Ivy Division\, which received their amphibious training at Camp Gordon Johnston and landed on D Day at Utah Beach. The Museum has received both financial and historical assistance from the National 4th Infantry Division Association and Division Past President and Historian Bob Babcock. Photos and personal memoirs of soldiers who participated in these two battles will be featured.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Honoring Native American Servicemen and Code Talkers
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is excited to announce a special exhibit honoring Native American Servicemen. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, October 31 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, November 25\, 2023.  November is National Native American Heritage Month\, and the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum salutes their service and sacrifice. The museum and exhibit is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission. The museum will be closed Thursday\, November 24 for Thanksgiving. \n“During World War I and World War II\, hundreds of American Indians joined the United States armed forces and used words from their traditional tribal languages as weapons. Their actions proved critical in several important campaigns\, and they are credited with saving thousands of American and allies’ lives.” \n(Source: The National Museum of the American Indian). \nVisitors are invited to come to the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum during this special exhibit and learn about the Native Americans\, including members of the Choctaw\, Navajo\, Cherokee\, Pima\, Comanche and other nations\, that served their country in World War II. Discover the story of the Code Talkers\, who used their unbreakable code based on their native tongues to help defeat the enemy. Hear the stories of the seven Medal of Honor Recipients in WWII that were Native American.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Battle of Midway and Doolittle's Raiders
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit about the Battle of Midway and Doolittle’s Raiders. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, August 29 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, September 30. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nThe Battle of Midway was the inflection point in the fortunes of the US and the Empire of Japan. The failures of US Intelligence in December of 1941 to anticipate the Pearl Harbor attack were replaced by the huge success in identifying Midway as Japan’s next target. The destruction of many of the Japanese ships that carried out the Pearl Harbor attack was a much needed boost for US morale. In addition\, this exhibit will cover how many of these ships have recently been discovered thanks to 21st century technology. Their power and menace are still visible in the images taken of them almost 80 years after their demise.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit on the Atomic Bomb and the End of WWII
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit about the Atomic Bomb and the End of WWII. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, July 18 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, August 26. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nIn August of 1945\, an atomic bomb was dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and then Nagasaki. Much has been debated about the decision to develop and use atomic weapons\, but historians generally agree that Germany\, Japan\, and the Soviet Union were well on their way to developing their own\, and both the Allies and the Japanese predicted that the invasion of the Japanese Homeland would have costs millions of lives on both sides. \nOn August 14\, 1945\, the Japanese surrendered without qualifications to the U.S. and preparations began for an official surrender and the end of World War II. On September 2\, the formal surrender documents were signed. This day is celebrated as Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) in the U.S. \nThis special exhibit commemorates the anniversary of the two bombings that brought WWII to a close. It will explore what made these bombs so destructive\, and how they were kept secret. Also displayed are artifacts relevant to the surrender\, souvenirs from Japan\, photos of post-war Japan and more. Visitors can use a Geiger counter to measure the radioactivity of samples of uraninite and trinitite\, and see vintage film of the aftermath of the bombs in Japan.

SUMMARY:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum Remembers the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting an exhibit to remember the Holocaust\, Hitler’s program to commit genocide against those he deemed unworthy\, especially Europe’s Jews.  This exhibit will open Tuesday\, April 4\, and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, April 29.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nBeginning in 1933\, the German Government established prison\, labor\, concentration\, and extermination camps throughout their territories\, including in countries they occupied before and during the war. The arrested and detained groups included Roma\, Communists\, Jehovah’s Witnesses\, homosexuals\, the disabled\, and especially Jews. Some 12 million people perished in the more than 44\,000 facilities\, ghettos\, and killing fields across Europe\, including 6 million Jews. The Museum acknowledges the need for all citizens to understand this dark period of history\, what caused it\, who perpetrated it\, and how some resisted and fought their captors. Eyewitnesses such as survivors and the soldiers that liberated these camps are aging and dying\, but many have told their stories. Visitors are invited to see this sobering exhibit and help our society remember those victims of atrocity\, prejudice\, and hate. \nThe internationally recognized date for Holocaust Remembrance Day corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar. It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. And this year will be remembered on Wed\, Apr 19\, 2023. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. For more information\, contact the museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. \n

SUMMARY:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum honors Canines and Cartoonists
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits throughout the month of March – one to honor our country’s canine military veterans and the other to recognize the role of cartoonists in WWII.  These exhibits will open Tuesday\, February 28\, and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, April 1.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nNational K9 Veterans Day\, March 13\, is a day set aside to honor and commemorate the service and sacrifices of the American military and working dogs throughout history. Dogs served in many capacities in wartime\, including in WWII\, as messengers and sentry dogs. However\, did you know that they were also trained for mine and explosive detection\, finding injured soldiers\, and flushing enemy troops from hidden spaces? Dogs’ keen sense of smell and acute hearing made them valuable assets in war and today for national security. This exhibit will recognize the important service that they loyally performed during WWII. \nDuring WWII\, the press was essential for keeping the public informed in wartime\, but cartoonists and cartoons played a unique role in bringing the war to citizens. The cartoon figure and possibly America’s earliest meme\, Kilroy\, is actually engraved on the WWII Memorial in the National Mall in Washington\, DC.  Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will share images of familiar characters like Private Snafu\, Donald Duck\, Willie and Joe\, and Kilroy\, who all play a prominent part in WWII history. The exhibit will also present the works of cartoonists like Bill Maudlin and Dave Breger and the animated works by Disney and Warner Brothers that served as both propaganda for citizens and training for servicemen. \nFunded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit on the Guadalcanal Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit on the Guadalcanal Campaign in the Pacific Theatre. This exhibit will be on display at the museum from Tuesday\, October 4 until Saturday\, October 29.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nOperation Watchtower\, which was the campaign in the Solomon Islands\, including the effort to control Guadalcanal (Aug 1942- Feb 1943) was the first offensive campaign against the Japanese in WWII. By mid 1942 the Japanese empire controlled a vast area of the Pacific Ocean and planned a large airfield on Guadalcanal\, which would have presented a direct risk to the supply route between the US and the Eastern coast of Australia\, interfering with plans to use Australia as a staging point for operations against New Guinea and against the huge Japanese base at Rabaul in the New Britain Islands. The Guadalcanal Campaign\, in conjunction with the Battle of Midway (June 1942)\, is considered a turning point in the war and a key to eventual victory over the Japanese. Come learn more about this fascinating history at this special exhibit October 4-29 at Camp Gordon Johnston Museum. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West\, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred in 1942-1943. Carrabelle Beach was the site of many practice beach assault landings.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit on Operation Market Garden: A Bridge Too Far
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit on Operation Market Garden. This exhibit will be on display at the museum from Tuesday\, September 6 until Saturday\, October 1. \nThe battle was commemorated in the 1977 film\, “A Bridge Too Far”.  “Band of Brothers”\, a miniseries from HBO in 2001\, also depicted the 101st Airborne’s part in this battle. They landed near Eindhoven and Veghel. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West\, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred in 1942-1943. Carrabelle Beach was the site of many practice beach assault landings. For more information\, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. SUMMARY:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum: Operation Torch Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit on the Campaign in North Africa called Operation Torch. This exhibit will be on display at the museum from Tuesday\, July 12 until Saturday\, September 3. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nOperation Torch (8 Nov 1942) was the first of several campaigns by the Allies in North Africa\, the first large Allied invasion in which the American military participated. It was also the first American airborne operation. North Africa saw the rise of the influence of General George Patton\, and his innovative use of tank warfare. Although the June 6\, 1944 Normandy Invasion is considered to be the iconic amphibious operation\, these tactics were already in use in North Africa. A unit from Camp Gordon Johnston\, the 61st Medical\, was deployed as part of Operation Torch with the First Engineers Special Brigade\, before Camp Gordon Johnston was even fully operational. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West\, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred in 1942-1943. Carrabelle Beach was the site of many practice beach assault landings.

SUMMARY:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum honors Canines and Cartoonists
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits to honor our country’s Canine Military Veterans and recognize the Role of Cartoonists in WWII.  These exhibits will open Tuesday\, March 1\, and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, April 2.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted. \nNational K9 Veterans Day\, March 13\, is a day set aside to honor commemorate the service and sacrifices of the American military and working dogs throughout history. Dogs served in many capacities in wartime\, including in WWII\, as messengers and sentry dogs\, but did you know that they were also trained for mine and explosive detection\, finding injured soldiers\, and flushing enemy troops from hidden spaces? Dogs’ keen sense of smell and acute hearing made them valuable assets in war and today for national security. This exhibit will recognize the important service that they loyally performed during WWII. \nThe press was essential for keeping the public informed in wartime\, but cartoonists and cartoons played a unique role in bringing the war to citizens. Did you know that the cartoon figure and possibly America’s earliest meme\, Kilroy\, is actually engraved on the WWII Memorial in the National Mall in Washington D.C.? Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will share images of familiar characters like Private Snafu\, Donald Duck\, Willie and Joe\, and Kilroy who all play a prominent part in WWII history. The exhibit will also present the works of cartoonists like Bill Maudlin and Dave Breger\, as well as the animated works by Disney and Warner Brothers that served as both propaganda for citizens and training for servicemen.
