SUMMARY:The Battle of Natural Bridge: History Program
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting an interesting history program entitled\, “The Battle of Natural Bridge”. This program features historian and author\, Dale Cox and will be held Saturday\, January 21\, 2023\, at 10 am – 12 pm in the upstairs room at C-Quarters Marina\, 501 St. James Ave (Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, FL. There is no charge for this event. \nThis program will explore the little known facts about the 1865 Union raid that culminated at the Battle of Natural Bridge\, the largest Civil War engagement in Florida’s Big Bend region and one of the last significant Confederate victories of the Civil War. Fought on March 6\, 1865\, along the St. Marks River\, the battle not only preserved Tallahassee’s status as the only unconquered Southern capital east of the Mississippi\, it protected a large area of North Florida and South Georgia from devastation at the hands of advancing Union troops. \nHistorian and author Dale Cox is the author of a book entitled\, “The Battle of Natural Bridge\, Florida: The Confederate Defense of Tallahassee”. Dale Cox is the author of more than one dozen books on Southern history and culture and has won numerous awards. \nThere is no fee for this program. Donations are gladly accepted to defray costs. SUMMARY:C-Quarters Youth Fishing Tournament
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, over 200 kids fished the tournament with some traveling as far away as Louisiana. This year we expect even more to join the fun and fishing activities. Friday evening\, prior to Saturday’s fishing day\, all entries in the tournament must attend a Fishing Clinic taught by the Dock Master of C-Quarters Marina\, Millard Collins. They are instructed on how to tie knots\, tie on hooks\, and overall safety while fishing. At the completion of the clinic\, each one receives a rod and reel\, a tee shirt\, hat\, and bait. Rod and reels are furnished by FishFloridatag.org. \nThere are nine categories of fish with three places in each category. There will be trophies awarded for each category. On Saturday morning\, the kids can fish from docks or\, if they can go out on a boat\, they are allowed to fish the Carrabelle River up to Dog Island. There will be a weighmaster available all day. \nLunch will be provided to the kids (Hot dogs\, baked beans\, chips\, and cokes) while the officials determine the tournament winners. \nAll participants must be registered prior to the tournament.

DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting a new educational program entitled\, “History of the Turpentine Industry in North Florida” featuring Barbara Clark\, Director of the North Central Region for Florida Public Archaeology (FPAN). The program will be held on Saturday\, February 12\, 2022\, from 10 am – 12 pm in the upstairs room at C-Quarters Marina\, 501 St. James Ave (Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, FL. \nLearn about the turpentine and naval stores industry in Florida and the impacts it had on Florida’s history and our local area’s economy. The presentation will include the beginnings of the industry in the Southeast\, through the convict leasing program during Reconstruction\, and insights into causes that led to the end of the industry in Florida. This presentation is most appropriate for adults\, but young people are welcome. \nBarbara Clark is a Registered Professional Archaeologist who specializes in historic archaeology of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Her interests include the turpentine and lumber industry\, specifically focusing on the social aspects of “camp life”. \nThese History Speaker Series programs are very popular and many programs fill to capacity. SUMMARY:18th Annual Kingfish Shootout
DESCRIPTION:The 18th Annual Kingfish Shootout will be held on August 7th & 8th\, 2021\, with the Captain’s Meeting at C-Quarters Marina the night of August 6th. The Shootout will be for kingfish and spanish mackerel. \nThe guaranteed payout will be $16\,500 with 10 places. You can win $5\,000 for the biggest kingfish. Prizes will be given for Youth Angler (16 years or younger) and Lady Angler for the biggest fish in addition to prize money\, if qualified. Youth and Lady Angler must catch their fish unassisted. The guaranteed payout for Spanish Mackerel will be $3\,500. 1st place is $2\,000\, 2nd place is $1\,000\, 3rd place is $500. Teams can enter both categories but only win in one category. The highest place wins. Make sure to weigh in your biggest fish. The boat Registration Fee is $350 per boat. After July 15th\, the Entry Fee will be $400 per boat. \nWith continuing thoughts of Lisa Crowder Jackson\, we are excited about the potential positive impact this event is going to have not only for the charity\, the Leukemia Research Foundation\, but the City of Carrabelle and Franklin County as a whole.

Joe has a B.S. from Western Michigan University\, an M.A. from Florida Atlantic University and a Ph.D. from Florida State University. He taught at both the secondary and collegiate levels\, and worked as a historian for the Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Natural Resources. \nThere is no charge for this event but reservations are required. SUMMARY:The Fort at Prospect Bluff
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting an interesting history program entitled\, “The Fort at Prospect Bluff” with historian and author\, Dale Cox. It may be hard to imagine now\, but right down the road in Franklin County on a bank of the Apalachicola River is a bluff that once boasted the biggest community of escaped slaves and free black people in the country. This free program will be held Saturday\, February 15\, 2020\, at 10 am – 12 pm at C-Quarters Marina. \nThe Fort at Prospect Bluff\, built by British troops during the final months of the War of 1812\, served as a rallying point and refugee center for more than 3\,000 Red Stick Creek Indians who evacuated into Florida. The fort was also the training station for a battalion of Colonial Marines (Black/Negro Marines). Escaped slaves from Spanish Florida and the United States filled the ranks of this unit. \nWhen the war ended\, Great Britain withdrew from the Apalachicola River. They turned the massive 14 ½ acre fort over to around 80 of the former Colonial Marines and their families\, creating a community of 300-350 men\, women\, and children. From 1815-1816\, it was the largest free black settlement in North America. \nU.S. forces destroyed the fort on July 27\, 1816. The deadliest single cannon shot in American history blew up the gunpowder magazine with a devastating flash. Recent research at Prospect Bluff\, now called Fort Gadsden\, is gaining national attention. Over the past four years more discoveries have been made on and about this site than in the 60 years prior. \nHistorian and author Dale Cox will tell the story that inspired his book\, “The Fort at Prospect Bluff” and discuss his research that led to the discovery of dozens of previously unpublished accounts. Dale Cox is the author of more than one dozen books on Southern history and culture and has won numerous awards. The new book from Dale Cox offers the most detailed account in print of the 1814-1816 history and destruction of the Fort at Prospect Bluff or “Negro Fort.” Copies of the book will be available.

DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting an interesting history program about the Historic Sawmills of Franklin County\, featuring Gibby Conrad. Hear the fascinating tales of the most prosperous times in our county\, and the lives of the hard working families who worked the huge mills. This free program will be held Saturday\, January 25\, 2020\, at 10 am – 12 pm at C-Quarters Marina. \nGibby Conrad is a lifelong student of Gulf Coast maritime history\, a pioneer of ecotourism on the Apalachicola Estuary\, and a former museum educator. He has conducted entertaining educational tours on the Apalachicola River and Bay for over 10 years. \nMark Curenton of the Apalachicola Area Historical Society will also be joining this program with his phenomenal display of Sawmills of Franklin County and will also be participating in the Q&A session at the end of the program.
