SUMMARY:Reserve Wednesday: Taking the Temperature of Sea Turtle Nests
DESCRIPTION:A sea turtle’s eggs depend heavily on the nest’s temperature to develop either into male or female hatchlings. If a nest’s beach is warmer\, it will hatch more females than males\, so how will climate change affect sea turtle populations? What will that mean for sea turtle conservation efforts? Megan Lamb\, a biologist at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve\, has been conducting a sea turtle nest monitoring program since 2016 as part of the global effort to gain some answers to these questions. On May 18 at 2PM\, she will present the results from the past few years and talk about some of the other turtle research going on across the world.

DESCRIPTION:Florida has one of the most active artificial reef programs along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Artificial reefs can enhance recreational and diving opportunities\, increase reef fish habitat\, help protect shorelines\, and provide a stable substrate for a number of marine and estuarine species. Here in Franklin County\, the Apalachicola Artificial Reef Association (AARA) is the organization that oversees the expansion of artificial reef structures. Grayson Shepard from the AARA will present an overview of what artificial reefs are and provide the latest updates on the reefs in Franklin County.

DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola NERR welcomes Franklin County to attend Virtual National Estuaries Day this September! As a measure of public safety\, National Estuaries Day at the Reserve – which usually draws 800 people – has moved online this year. The mission of National Estuaries Day is to connect people with the estuarine community that supports the life of thousands of species\, including us\, the humans that live off the bay. Annually in the past\, that mission was accomplished by inviting students\, families and experts alike to gather in one place for one day to share knowledge about the bay and enthusiasm for its conservation. This year\, we are taking the opportunity to expand the scope from just one day at the Apalachicola NERR Nature Center to a whole week around the entire Apalachicola Bay watershed. \nWhat: Virtual Estuaries Week Online Celebration and Remote BioBlitz\nWhen: Virtual Estuaries Week Activities – Sept. 19-26\, 2020\nLive BioBlitz at St. George Island State Park – Saturday\, Sept. 26\, 2020\, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. \nJoin us virtually for our celebration of the Estuary beginning on Sept. 19 by visiting our website. There will be video tours\, virtual field experiences\, downloadable/printable activity sheets\, and a weeklong digital BioBlitz that you can participate in by downloading the ‘iNaturalist’ app or ‘Seek by iNaturalist’ and uploading any species you find around the whole Reserve! \nFor details about the apps: \n\nSeek by iNaturalist\niNaturalist\n\nClick here to check up on the status of the BioBlitz. \nThere will be one day of in-person activities on Saturday\, Sept. 26. Registration on Eventbrite will be required in advance (Click here to register). The event will take place at St. George Island State Park from 9 a.m to 3 p.m.\, but your group’s participation in all activities will only take about two hours. Groups of no more than 10 people will visit three stations. Proper precautions following CDC guidelines will be in place\, including a hand-washing and hand sanitizer station\, social distancing\, and mask enforcement for staff and participants. There will be 15 minutes between groups to clean and sanitize any equipment as necessary. During visits to each of the stations\, participants will be able to receive coaching in using the Seek app and be provided with opportunities to find and identify species in three distinct habitats on St. George Island. The event is free\, but participants will need to pay admission fees at the State Park entrance.

DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola River has been called “the Lifeblood of the Bay.” Freshwater from the river mixes with salty gulf creating Apalachicola Bay\, one of the most pristine and productive estuaries in the country. The river has always played an important role in Apalachicola’s history and it is vital to our lives today. It is also a significant resource for the state of Florida\, and its freshwater flow is critical to the health and productivity of the Gulf of Mexico. \nParticipants will learn about the ecology\, culture\, and history of the Apalachicola River and floodplain\, as well as come to appreciate the impact interstate relationships play in the control of the river. After the in-class portion\, participants will embark on a journey up the river aboard the ANERR research vessel Henry Lee to get an up-close look at some of the floodplain ecosystems and distributaries of the river. \nTickets for the class are free but must be claimed in advance by visiting our eventbrite page at apalachicolareserve.eventbrite.com. SUMMARY:Living Shorelines Overview for Residents
DESCRIPTION:Coastal erosion is a natural process caused by currents\, wave action\, wind\, storms and even boat wakes. The traditional methods used to harden the shoreline like seawalls and rip rap can actually often increase the rate of coastal erosion as well as remove the ability of the shoreline to carry out natural processes. \nThe Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR) will host a workshop on using Living Shorelines to combat erosion on Thursday\, February 20\, 2020\, 2:00-4:00 pm for local residents and homeowners. The workshop will discuss living shorelines vs. hardened shorelines as well as how to evaluate a shoreline by considering the physical factors such as wave energy\, prevailing wind and wave direction\, vegetation\, and soil type\, in addition to presenting living shoreline methods\, materials\, permitting\, and success stories of local living shorelines. We will also look at which types of plants are the most beneficial and visit a local living shoreline. \nThis lecture is free\, but please register in advance on our eventbrite page.
