SUMMARY:Flight of the Monarchs Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve for this free educational event for all ages. Each fall monarch butterflies pass through our area during their 2\,ooo mile long migration to their overwintering grounds in Central Mexico. Over the past 25 years\, Reserve staff along with volunteers have routinely captured\, tagged and released monarchs as part of Monarch Watch’s Citizen Science program to understand the dynamics of the migration through mark and recapture. Activities will include: \n\nMonarch Migration Presentation followed by Tagging\nDemonstration & Release of Tagged Monarchs in Garden\n4 Sessions begin at 1:15\, 2:15\, 3:15 & 4:15 (limit of 60/session)\n“Flight of the Butterflies” Movie (56 mins)\n3 Showings begin at 1:30\, 3:00 & 4:30 (limit of 30/showing)\nDisplays on the Monarchs Life Cycle\, Planting Native\nMilkweed and Microscopic Detection of OE Parasite\nChildren’s activities include: Button Making\, “Pin the Tag\nthe Monarch” Game\, Butterfly Face Painting and Creating\nMonarch Ink Block Prints

SUMMARY:Fishy Fashion Show and Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve is excited to present Fishy Fashion\, a special installation in our Nature Center running September 30–December 31\, 2025. \nThis creative and educational exhibit showcases a collection of whimsical costumes crafted from flotsam\, jetsam\, and other beach debris by local artist Joan Matey. Visitors will also enjoy sculptures and fashion accessories designed by Franklin County School art students\, along with educational displays highlighting the causes and impacts of marine debris on our oceans. The exhibition kicks off with a “Fishy Fashion Show” on Tuesday\, September 30th at 5:30 PM\, where the art will come to life on the runway. Following the opening event\, the exhibit will remain on display in the Reserve’s Nature Center through the end of December.
