SUMMARY:FSUCML Lecture Series - Dr. Dean Grubbs (April 20th at 7:00 pm)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Dean Grubbs is a fish ecologist with >30 years of experience studying the biology and ecology of sharks and rays in coastal\, pelagic\, and deep-sea environs. Dean’s interest in sharks stems from being raised in Florida’s Gulf coast. After 15 years away doing research based in south Florida\, The Bahamas\, Virginia and Hawaii\, Dean returned “home” in 2007 and has been research faculty at Florida State University’s Coastal and Marine Laboratory since\, where he maintains an active and highly collaborative lab and mentors graduate and undergraduate students. In this lecture\, Dean will pull examples from his research and recent books to display the diversity and splendor of shark life\, the roles sharks play in marine ecosystems\, the challenges and successes of shark fisheries management and conservation\, and illustrated with some “highlights” and “lowlights” from his own research career.

SUMMARY:FSUCML Lecture Series - Dr. Sally D. Hacker
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our second lecture of 2023! March 23\, 2023\, from 7:00 – 8:00 pm at the FSU Coastal and Marine Laboratory. \nDr. Sally D. Hacker will present on “Dune Grasses\, Sand\, and Coastal Function and Services.” For centuries\, coastal dunes have provided humans with important services such as coastal protection\, recreation\, carbon sequestration\, and biodiversity conservation. They occur at most latitudes on Earth and cover over a third of the world’s ice-free coastline. They form at low-lying coastal margins where sand transported by oceanic waves and wind combines with vegetation to produce dynamic backshore structures. In this presentation\, Dr. Hacker synthesizes field surveys and a suite of interdisciplinary laboratory\, mesocosm\, and computer modeling studies to examine the relative role of dune grasses and sand supply in determining dune shape. She focuses on how dune grasses have transformed sandy US coastlines to produce variable levels of coastal hazard exposure and other critical services.

SUMMARY:FSUCML Lecture Series feat. Dr. Jerry Lorenz - "Florida Bay's Pink Wading Birds"
DESCRIPTION:Over a thirty-year career\, Dr. Lorenz has studied the ecology of Florida Bay focusing on Roseate Spoonbills and\, more recently\, on American Flamingos. He will present some of his scientific findings regarding both species with a focus on conservation and restoration of the Everglades and Florida Bay. With Flamingos\, he presents why the state of Florida considered them an introduced species and why historic and recent data indicates that they are indeed native to Florida. He discusses that Florida Bay was historically the major habitat for Flamingos in the state and why they warrant legal protection. Using Spoonbills as an ecosystem indicator species he reviews the reasons for the decline of this species since the early 1980s; what Everglades Restoration is doing and should be doing for this species and why climate change and sea level rise are further threatening what was once the sole nesting place for this species in Florida. \nJerome J. Lorenz’s research focuses on the impact of water management in the southern Everglades on the coastal ecosystems of Florida Bay. Specifically\, the project examines the linkages between fresh water deliveries from the Everglades\, the abundance of aquatic plants and prey fishes in the mangroves and the success of nesting Roseate Spoonbills in Florida Bay. In 2000 Jerry became Research Director at Audubon Florida’s Everglades Science Center after completion of his Ph.D. from University of Miami. He was promoted to Research Director for Audubon Florida in 2005. He currently serves as a member of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council and on the Monroe County Climate Change Advisory Council.
