SUMMARY:Online Sci-Café: What is Water Quality and Why Does It Matter?
DESCRIPTION:Ethan Bourque\, water quality researcher with the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve will discuss changes in trends in long-term meteorology and water quality data\, which the Reserve has collected as part of the NERR’s system-wide monitoring program for more than 28 years. Ethan will discuss how trends in meteorology and water quality have changed in the Apalachicola estuary over the past two decades\, why these changes are important\, and the potential implications these trends may have for the future of the system. \nTo register for the virtual workshop\, go to: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/5824148711456286560  After registering\, you’ll get a confirmation email about joining the event.

SUMMARY:Online Sci-Café: Apalachicola Bay Systems Initiative Update
DESCRIPTION:Apalachicola Bay’s oyster industry thrived for over a century\, but in 2012 the fishery collapsed. Several restoration efforts have been implemented\, but oyster populations have not recovered. In 2019\, Florida State University was awarded funding for the Apalachicola Bay System Initiative (ABSI) by Triumph Gulf Coast with the goal of gaining insight into the root causes of the oyster population demise\, understanding why the system was not recovering\, and identifying potential pathways to a healthy Bay ecosystem and oyster fishery. Principle Investigator and FSU Marine Lab Faculty Dr. Sandra Brooke give an update on the progress of the Initiative and the results of their restoration research and experiments. Devin Resko\, the Fishery Disaster Relief Program Coordinator with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission\, will give an update on FWC’s efforts to restore the oyster bars and revive the fishery for the benefit of oysters and oyster harvesters. FWC has received funds to restore the oyster reefs but must first conduct a pilot study this spring to prove to funders that restoration methods are sound. \nTo register for the virtual workshop\, go to: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/2918905838271626845. After registering\, you’ll get a confirmation email about joining the event.

SUMMARY:Reserve Wednesday: FSU Marine Lab Hatcheries
DESCRIPTION:Emily Fuqua and Morgan Hawkins will talk about the two hatcheries at the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory. One is a research and restoration hatchery with the purpose of supporting the Apalachicola Bay Systems Initiative (ABSI)\, and the other is a small mobile experimental unit for commercial seed production. These hatcheries play a significant role in the historic and emerging economies in this region.

SUMMARY:Reserve Wednesday: Nesting Shorebirds
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about what it takes to be a breeding shorebird in the panhandle and the hardships that come with nesting in this ever-changing landscape. Brian Cammarano\, Audubon FL Shorebird Stewardship Coordinator\, will introduce us to the five focal species that the Florida Shorebird Alliance closely monitors throughout the panhandle and how you can help beach-nesting birds through volunteering. We will also get the most up to date information regarding nesting activity in the eastern panhandle.

DESCRIPTION:Diamondback terrapins are a brackish water turtle species with an extensive range\, inhabiting much of the United States Gulf and Atlantic coasts. U.S. Geological Survey and partners are currently studying diamondback terrapins throughout the Florida panhandle to learn more about the species in an previously understudied portion of their range. Join USGS biologist Dan Catizone at the Apalachicola NERR at 2PM on Wednesday\, September 21 for a presentation about what they’ve learned so far.

SUMMARY:Reserve Wednesday: Taking the Temperature of Sea Turtle Nests
DESCRIPTION:A sea turtle’s eggs depend heavily on the nest’s temperature to develop either into male or female hatchlings. If a nest’s beach is warmer\, it will hatch more females than males\, so how will climate change affect sea turtle populations? What will that mean for sea turtle conservation efforts? Megan Lamb\, a biologist at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve\, has been conducting a sea turtle nest monitoring program since 2016 as part of the global effort to gain some answers to these questions. On May 18 at 2PM\, she will present the results from the past few years and talk about some of the other turtle research going on across the world.

SUMMARY:Reserve Wednesday: Artificial Reefs in Franklin County
DESCRIPTION:Florida has one of the most active artificial reef programs along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Artificial reefs can enhance recreational and diving opportunities\, increase reef fish habitat\, help protect shorelines\, and provide a stable substrate for a number of marine and estuarine species. Here in Franklin County\, the Apalachicola Artificial Reef Association (AARA) is the organization that oversees the expansion of artificial reef structures. Grayson Shepard from the AARA will present an overview of what artificial reefs are and provide the latest updates on the reefs in Franklin County.

SUMMARY:Online Sci-Café: Restoration of MK Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Jeff Beal\, lead Florida biologist for Ducks Unlimited\, will tell us about the MK Ranch project\, a key restoration project on the Apalachicola River. MK Ranch comprises approximately 6\,400 acres of historic tidal marsh in the lower Apalachicola River Basin and acts as a filter and storage area for water flowing from upland sites to the tributaries of Lake Wimico and Apalachicola Bay. Previous activity from the 1970s severed the river from its floodplain\, changed water flow patterns restricting freshwater flows into the estuarine system. This had downstream consequences for water quality in Apalachicola Bay. \nPlease register for Restoration of MK Ranch on March 25\, 2021 3:00 PM at: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/3864379163498082063. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
