SUMMARY:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum honors Canines and Cartoonists
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits to honor our country’s Canine Military Veterans and recognize the Role of Cartoonists in WWII.  These exhibits will open Tuesday\, March 1\, and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, April 2.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted. \nNational K9 Veterans Day\, March 13\, is a day set aside to honor commemorate the service and sacrifices of the American military and working dogs throughout history. Dogs served in many capacities in wartime\, including in WWII\, as messengers and sentry dogs\, but did you know that they were also trained for mine and explosive detection\, finding injured soldiers\, and flushing enemy troops from hidden spaces? Dogs’ keen sense of smell and acute hearing made them valuable assets in war and today for national security. This exhibit will recognize the important service that they loyally performed during WWII. \nThe press was essential for keeping the public informed in wartime\, but cartoonists and cartoons played a unique role in bringing the war to citizens. Did you know that the cartoon figure and possibly America’s earliest meme\, Kilroy\, is actually engraved on the WWII Memorial in the National Mall in Washington D.C.? Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will share images of familiar characters like Private Snafu\, Donald Duck\, Willie and Joe\, and Kilroy who all play a prominent part in WWII history. The exhibit will also present the works of cartoonists like Bill Maudlin and Dave Breger\, as well as the animated works by Disney and Warner Brothers that served as both propaganda for citizens and training for servicemen. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. For more information\, contact the museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

SUMMARY:Carrabelle History Museum Special Exhibit on "C. C. Land Turpentine Camp
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is excited to announce a new special exhibit on “C. C. Land Turpentine Camp”. This exhibit will be on display from Wednesday\, March 2 through Saturday\, April 30. There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted. The museum and exhibit are open Wednesdays 12-5 pm\, Thursdays thru Saturdays 10 am – 5 pm and Sundays 12 – 5 pm. \nClifford C. Land\, known as C. C. Land\, founded turpentine operations in Tate’s Hell in the 1930s\, starting at High Bluff and moving to Greenpoint\, between Eastpoint and Carrabelle. Turpentine camp workers needed exceptional strength to wield the heavy hand tools and had to master skillful techniques to maximize the amount of sap they could get from a pine tree without destroying it. C.C. kept the company going until wage labor laws made it no longer feasible\, and this was the last operating turpentine camp in Franklin County. In the late 1940s\, the business converted to logging and cattle raising. \nThe exhibit shows the difficult process of gathering sap and distilling it into resin with many photos\, artifacts\, letters\, and documents from the C. C. Land Turpentine Company. An impressive array of tools unique to the turpentine trade and old hand-made wood and tin tool carriers are on display. There are bark hacks\, scrapers\, axes\, odd-shaped galvanized buckets from the late 1930s\, and a collection of different types of pots and trays used to collect the pine sap. The historic photos of the camp workers on the job reflect their skill and strength and illustrate the challenges of this long-ago profession. Aluminum tokens\, known as scrip used for purchases at the camp commissary are also part of the display\, as well as samples of the many medicinal products made from pine derivatives. \nThis amazing collection of authentic artifacts is on loan from Bonnie Allen\, granddaughter of Clifford C. Land and retired Park Services Specialist. She will be at the Carrabelle History Museum on Saturday\, March 19 from 10 am – 3 pm to further interpret her collection and discuss the turpentine industry in Franklin County. Bonnie Allen is from Apalachicola and worked with the Florida Park Service for over 35 years\, at St. George Island State Park\, St. Andrews State Park\, and most recently with Tallahassee-St. Marks Area Parks. \nCome to the museum to learn about the history of this hard way of life in Franklin County. Carrabelle History Museum is located\, one block from Carrabelle Harbor\, at 106 SE Avenue B\, Carrabelle\, FL. Funding in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. For more information\, contact 850-697-2141 or go to www.carrabellehistorymuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Sunset and Full Moon Climb at Cape St. George Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The April Sunset and Full Moon Climb at the Cape St. George Lighthouse on St. George Island will be held on Saturday\, April 16\, 2022. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy the view of St. George Island\, the Gulf of Mexico\, and the Apalachicola Bay under the evening sky from the top of the lighthouse. \nThe Sunset and Full Moon Climb will begin at 8:00 p.m. and run until 10:00 p.m. Fifteen-minute time slots will be allotted for each group on a first-come\, first-served basis. No advanced reservations will be taken. You will purchase your tickets in the gift shop and then sign up for your 15-minute time slot with the lighthouse keeper. Up to 12 persons are allowed in each 15-minute time slot. The gift shop will open at 7:30 pm to begin selling tickets. \nCost is $10.00 per climber for the general public and $7.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. Cash or credit card payments accepted. All climbers must be at least 40 inches tall to climb the tower and children must be age 13 and over to access the outside catwalk. For more information\, please contact the Lighthouse Gift Shop at 850-927-7745. \nThe sun will set at 8:07 p.m. and the “Pink” moon will rise at 8:16 p.m. on April 16. The April full moon is called the Pink moon in tribute to wild ground phlox\, also called “pinks\,” which is one of the earliest widespread flowers to appear in the spring. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Parking is available in lots at either side of the park.
