SUMMARY:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum: Atomic Bomb Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit on the Atomic Bomb.  This exhibit will open Tuesday\, August 17 at 11 am and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, September 25\, 2021\, at 5 pm.  There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted. \nThis special exhibition commemorates the anniversary of the two bombings that brought WWII to a close: the atomic bombs attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On August 6\, 1945\, the first atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima. A second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9. Much has been debated about the decision to develop and use atomic weapons\, but historians generally agree that Germany\, Japan\, and the Soviet Union were well on their way to developing their own\, and both the Allies and the Japanese predicted that the invasion of the Japanese Homeland (codenamed “Downfall”) would have cost millions of lives on both sides. \nThis exhibit will explore what made these bombs so destructive\, and how they were kept secret.  Come and learn about the people\, the places\, the science\, and the aftermath of this significant event that ended WWII. Visitors can use a Geiger counter to measure the radioactivity of samples of uraninite and trinitite and see vintage films of the aftermath of the bombs in Japan. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. For more information\, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

SUMMARY:Sunset and Full Moon Climb at Cape St. George Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The August Sunset and Full Moon Climb at the Cape St. George Lighthouse on St. George Island will be held on Sunday\, August 22\, 2021. Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to view St. George Island\, the Gulf of Mexico\, and the Apalachicola Bay under the evening sky. \nThe sun will set at 8:10 p.m. and the “Sturgeon” moon will rise at 8:47 p.m. on August 22nd. The August full moon is called the Sturgeon Moon because sturgeon\, large fish common to the Great Lakes and other large bodies of water\, are most readily caught in August. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. \nThe Sunset and Full Moon Climb will begin at 7:45 p.m. and run until 9:45 p.m. Fifteen-minute time slots will be allotted for each group on a first-come\, first-served basis. No reservations. You will purchase your tickets in the gift shop and then sign up for your 15-minute time slot with the lighthouse keeper. Up to 12 persons are allowed in each 15-minute time slot. The gift shop will open at 7:15 pm to begin selling tickets. \nCost is $10.00 per climber for the general public and $7.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. Cash or credit card payments accepted. All climbers must be at least 40 inches tall to climb the tower and children must be age 13 and over to access the outside catwalk. For more information\, please contact the Lighthouse Gift Shop at 850-927-7745. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Parking is available in lots at either side of the park.
