SUMMARY:Special Exhibit Honoring Native American Servicemembers
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is excited to announce a special exhibit honoring Native American Servicemen\, opening Tuesday\, November 3 and on display until Saturday\, November 28. November is National Native American Heritage Month\, and the museum salutes their service and sacrifice. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday\, 11 am to 5 pm ET with free admission. \n“During World War I and World War II\, hundreds of American Indians joined the United States armed forces and used words from their traditional tribal languages as weapons. The United States military asked them to develop secret battle communications based on their languages—and America’s enemies never deciphered the coded messages they sent. “Code Talkers\,” as they came to be known after World War II\, are twentieth-century American Indian warriors and heroes who significantly aided the victories of the United States and its allies. \nThe Code Talkers’ role in war required intelligence and bravery. They developed and memorized a special code. They endured some of the most dangerous battles and remained calm under fire. They served proudly\, with honor and distinction. Their actions proved critical in several important campaigns\, and they are credited with saving thousands of American and allies’ lives.” (Source: The National Museum of the American Indian). \nVisitors are invited to learn about the Native American Servicemembers\, including members of the Choctaw\, Navajo\, Cherokee\, Pima\, Comanche and other nations that served their country in World War II. Guests can discover the story of the Code Talkers\, who used their unbreakable code based on their native tongues to help defeat the enemy and the stories of the seven Native American Medal of Honor Recipients from WWII.

SUMMARY:WAR Comes to Apalachicola! The Sinking & Rescue of the Empire Mica
DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola Area Historical Society (AAHS) will be hosting a special program\, “WAR Comes to Apalachicola! The Sinking & Rescue of the Empire Mica\,” featuring Grayson Shepard on Tuesday\, November 10\, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. ET at the Raney Museum Carriage House\, 126 Market Street in Apalachicola. The program is open to the public\, although seating is limited. There is no charge and donations are warmly welcomed. \nOn June 29\, 1942\, the British tanker Empire Mica\, carrying fuel for the Royal Air Force during World War II\, was torpedoed by a German U-boat approximately 21 miles south of Cape San Blas. In response\, Apalachicola fishing boats rushed to the scene and rescued the survivors\, demonstrating the courage and compassion of the local fishing fleet during wartime. Grayson Shepard’s presentation will explore the sinking\, the dramatic rescue\, and current efforts to memorialize the valiant actions of Apalachicola’s fishing fleet. \nAn offshore charter captain and avid scuba diver in Franklin County since 1999\, Shepard has a longstanding interest in military history and the Empire Mica story. He has visited the wreck site dozens of times and helped secure its designation as an underwater archaeological site on the Florida Panhandle Shipwreck Trail. \nSeating is limited so come early to get a spot. For more information\, please call and leave a message at (850) 653-1700\, email to AAHS.Raney@gmail.com\, or online.

SUMMARY:Carrabelle History Museum Expands Military Veteran Tribute Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is proud to announce a special addition to its Military Veteran Tribute Exhibit in honor of Veterans Day. Recognizing local men who served in the armed forces from World War I through the Vietnam War\, the exhibit has received a heartfelt response from the community and veterans’ families. This year’s featured veteran\, Chief Warrant Officer 5 Henry Lowery\, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.)\, joins other veterans with deep ties to Carrabelle and Franklin County in a tribute to their courage\, service\, and sacrifice. The display will be open November 11–29\, at the Carrabelle History Museum. \nHenry Lowery was born in Carrabelle and graduated from Carrabelle High School in 1967. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 34 years. His distinguished career included two tours in Vietnam and service in the Persian Gulf\, Beirut\, Lebanon\, and Grenada. Henry\, who rose through the ranks to Chief Warrant Officer 5\, specialized in weapons training and leadership. After retiring\, he continued serving others by mentoring young people and supporting veterans and their families. He also helped organize the Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum and later became a founding member of the Big Bend Hospice Valor Team\, which honors veterans at the end of life. In recognition of his military service and continued contributions to Florida’s veterans and communities\, Lowery was inducted into the Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame in 2023. His life reflects a lasting commitment to service\, both in uniform and beyond. \nHenry is a son of Classie Lowery\, a beloved community leader known as the “Mother of the Hill\,” who raised 26 children\, championed education and supported families. His family’s Carrabelle roots extend to Abraham Allen\, one of the town’s 19 original founders who signed the 1881 founding petition. Born enslaved and later emancipated\, Allen helped shape Carrabelle’s early history. Abraham’s daughter\, Laura Allen Wiggins\, known as “Aunt Laura\,” was a beloved midwife who delivered generations of Carrabelle residents and provided vital medical care when few options existed. Their legacy of perseverance and service lives on through Henry’s dedication to others. \nVisitors can explore military artifacts generously shared by veterans’ families and on loan from the Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum. The museum extends special thanks to the veterans’ families\, Lisa Keith-Lucas\, and the Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum for helping make the exhibit possible. \nThe public is invited to visit the museum and honor these local heroes. Museum hours are Wednesdays\, 12-5 pm ET; Thursdays through Saturdays\, 10 am-5 pm ET; and Sundays\, 12-5 pm ET. Admission is free\, and donations are gratefully accepted.
