DESCRIPTION:The Franklin County Public Libraries continues its popular writers’ series entitled\, “Pen to Paper” with another interesting program scheduled for Monday\, May 13 at 2 pm at the Carrabelle Branch Library. This session will feature newspaperman David Adlerstein. \nDuring the series authors will discuss and share the works they have written and those that are in progress. This will be followed by a question and answer session. These friendly and informal sessions are a chance to meet these area authors and ask questions about their experiences. They are open to anyone interested in learning more about these writers or the writing process. There is no charge to attend and the public is welcome. \nAfter growing up in Columbus\, Ohio\, David Adlerstein has been a newspaperman ever since high school\, and has made a living at it ever since graduating Brandeis University in 1979. He has written everything from news to sports to features\, and has taken photographs\, for a variety of publications. He edited the weeklies The Bellville Star\, Medical Business\, The Apalachicola Times and The Port St. Joe Star\, and has received numerous awards for his work from the Florida Press Association. \nAnthony Lee Watkins\, who was originally scheduled to participate in this program\, will not be able to attend. DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola Area Historical Society (AAHS) will be presenting another one of their fascinating Spring Speaker Programs featuring Jack Rudloe on Saturday\, May 18\, 2024 at 4:00 pm at the Raney Carriage House\, 126 Market Street\, Apalachicola\, FL. \nJack Rudloe is the founder of Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory in Panacea\, Florida\, a unique environmental education center and public aquarium that supplies marine organisms to schools and research laboratories. He is the author of seven well-known books on Florida natural history and marine life. Jack has published articles in National Geographic Magazine\, Smithsonian\, Sports Illustrated\, Natural History\, Audubon\, and other magazines. He achieved the first live exhibit of the world’s largest isopod\, the deep-sea giant sea roach. He was instrumental in the New York Aquarium’s exhibit of the giant Surinam toadfish\, also a first. He traveled to Malaysia and The People’s Republic of China as a representative of the U.S. International Trade Commission to develop fisheries cooperative agreements. He participated in teaching the first field marine biology class offered at the University of Central America\, Managua\, Nicaragua. \nThese Speakers events are part of a well-established and popular series by the Apalachicola Area Historical Society with speakers through May on Saturdays\, mid-month\, at 4pm. Local and tourist history enthusiasts have gathered for these informative talks for a number of years. Previous speakers have spoken about Apalachicola’s predominantly African American North Side\, Territorial City St Joseph\, Early Maps of the area\, Niles Register Florida History\, the ice delivery industry\, Cemetery Preservation\, Apalachicola Historic Squares and more. \nSeating is limited so come early to get a spot. SUMMARY:Full Moon Event at Crooked River Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting a Full Moon Lighthouse Event on Thursday\, May 23\, from 8:00-10:00 pm in Carrabelle\, FL with live music from Kevin Andrew and the Rockulla Performers. Visitors can enjoy the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the glow of the rising Flower Moon and evening sky. Plus purchase some delicious food from one of the local favorites\, A Train Stop food truck. \nAt this month’s Full Moon event\, attendees are in for a treat as the exceptionally talented musicians\, Kevin Andrew and the Rockulla Performers\, take center stage. The Rockulla Performers are made up of a variety of young talent that will be playing guitar and ukulele as well as singing an assortment of songs including some classic country tunes\, timeless oldies\, and more. \nVisitors can enjoy an after-hours tour of the Keeper’s House Museum and see the exhibit for the lighthouse’s original\, historic Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris\, France. Guests can browse the unique nautical gifts and souvenirs in the gift shop. Visitors may also enjoy the glowing bonfire in the park (weather permitting). Bring a chair and enjoy the evening. \nFor those brave souls who are bold enough to venture to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast\, evening tower climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals throughout the event. Climbers will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the bay. Evening climbs cost $10 and climb reservations are encouraged due to limited availability. Climbers must be at least 44 inches tall and children under 12 (FREE) with ticketed adults. Advance tickets are strongly suggested as slots may sell out and can be purchased online or in the lighthouse gift shop.

DESCRIPTION:The May Sunset and Full Moon Climb at the Cape St. George Lighthouse on St. George Island will be held on Thursday\, May 23\, 2024. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy the view of St. George Island\, the Gulf of Mexico and the Apalachicola Bay under the evening sky from the top of the lighthouse. \nThe Sunset and Full Moon Climb will begin at 8:00 p.m. and run until 11:00 p.m. Fifteen-minute time slots will be allotted for each group on a first come\, first served basis. No advanced reservations will be taken. You will purchase your tickets in the gift shop and then sign up for your 15-minute time slot with the lighthouse keeper. Up to 12 persons allowed in each 15-minute time slot. The gift shop will open at 7:30pm to begin selling tickets. \nCost is $10.00 per climber for the general public and $7.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. Cash or credit card payments accepted. All climbers must be at least 40 inches tall to climb the tower and children must be age 13 and over to access the outside catwalk. For more information\, please contact the Lighthouse Gift Shop at 850-927-7745. \nThe sun will set at 8:31 p.m. and the “Flower” moon will rise at 9:02 p.m. on May 23rd. The May full moon is called the “Flower” moon because flowers are in abundant bloom at this time. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Parking is available in lots at either side of the park.

At the kick off parties\, participants can learn about activities\, register for summer reading events\, and enjoy a delicious ice cream social. \nBoth library branches will have fun activities for both kids and adults during the Summer Reading Program under the theme of “Adventure Begins At Your Library”\, which will feature the outdoors. Library programs are free and open to the public and participants do not need a library card to participate. SUMMARY:Apalach Ghost Tour
DESCRIPTION:Take a paranormal ghost tour of downtown Apalachicola and see if any ghosts still roam the streets. Your ghostly guide will tell you local ghost stories all while using real ghost hunting equipment to see if any spirits are still around. Select tour goers and volunteers will get to use EMF detectors\, and other ghost hunting equipment at select locations on the tour. Bring your positive energy and let’s try to say “hello” to the ghosts of Apalachicola. The tour will begin in front of the Chamber of Commerce which is located at 17 Avenue E next to the Dixie Theatre and may last up to 90-minutes.  Get tickets at:  ApalachGhostTour.com \nTickets: $15 and $5 for kids 3 to 12 years old. Infants to 2 years of age do not require a ticket.
