SUMMARY:Carrabelle History Museum: Shipwrecks of Dog Island
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting a fascinating history program about the Shipwrecks of Dog Island. This program features Florida historian\, Chuck Meide and will be held Saturday\, January 15\, 2022\, at 10 am – 12 pm in the upstairs room at C-Quarters Marina\, 501 St. James Ave (Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, FL. There is no charge for this event. \nThis program will explore Dog Island’s rich maritime history\, and especially focus on those shipwrecks that resulted from the Category 5 direct hit\, the “Carrabelle Hurricane” in 1899. In prehistory\, Dog Island was used as a campground by Paleo-Indians. It served as a safe harbor for European explorers and smugglers and later for fishermen and lumber tradesmen. Dog Island served as an amphibious training site during World War II. Most recently\, Hurricane Michael uncovered parts of two ships that were shipwrecked during the 1899 event. \nChuck Meide is a maritime archaeologist and the Director of the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP) for over 15 years. LAMP is a program by the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum to conduct research and maritime archaeology in St. Augustine and the State of Florida. Chuck has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Anthropology with a focus in underwater archaeology from Florida State University and has undertaken Ph.D. studies in Historical Archaeology at the College of William and Mary. \nThere is no fee for this program. Donations are gladly accepted to defray costs. Sponsored by C-Quarters Marina\, Sunset Isle RV Resort\, and Shaun Donahoe Realty. Funding in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. Seating will be limited and masks are optional. Attendees are asked to follow health guidelines including social distancing and sanitizing hands. For more information\, contact 850-697-2141.

SUMMARY:January Sunset and Full Moon Climb at Cape St. George Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The January Sunset and Full Moon Climb at the Cape St. George Lighthouse on St. George Island will be held on Monday\, January 17\, 2022. Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to view St. George Island\, the Gulf of Mexico\, and the Apalachicola Bay under the evening sky. \nThe Sunset and Full Moon Climb will begin at 5:30 p.m. and run until 7:30 p.m. Fifteen-minute time slots will be allotted for each group on a first-come\, first-served basis. No advanced reservations will be taken. You will purchase your tickets in the gift shop and then sign up for your 15-minute time slot with the lighthouse keeper. Up to 12 persons are allowed in each 15-minute time slot. The gift shop will open at 5:00 pm to begin selling tickets. \nCost is $10.00 per climber for the general public and $7.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. Cash or credit card payments accepted. All climbers must be at least 40 inches tall to climb the tower and children must be age 13 and over to access the outside catwalk. For more information\, please contact the Lighthouse Gift Shop at 850-927-7745. \nThe sun will set at 6:04 p.m. and the “Wolf” moon will rise at 5:50 p.m. on January 17. The January full moon is called the Wolf Moon because wolves often hunt at night and the howling of wolves could be heard outside Indian villages. As such\, their howling became associated with nightfall and particularly\, the moon amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter. Thus\, the name for January’s full moon. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Parking is available in lots at either side of the park.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: 476th and the 818th\, Black Amphibious Truck Companies
DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of Black History Month\, the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will present an exhibit on the history of two Black Amphibious Truck Companies\, the 476th and the 818th. These are two of several Amphibious Truck Companies that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston during World War II. This exhibit will open Tuesday\, February 1\, 2022\, and be on display until Saturday\, February 26. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and there is no charge for admission. \nThe 476th Amphibious Truck Company trained at Camp Gordon Johnston and was deployed with the Marine Corps for the campaign on Iwo Jima. The 818th Amphibious Truck Company also trained at Camp Gordon Johnston and was deployed to Normandy. The members of the 818th also then spent part of the fall of 1944 driving for the Red Ball Express. \nRosters of WWII companies are very difficult to assemble\, and for Black units\, this is particularly challenging. Thanks to the family of the commanding officer of the 818th and the assistance of the National Archives\, partial rosters of both companies have been assembled. The volunteers and staff of the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will present what they know of these men who served their country with honor in a military that was still segregated. The hope is that the descendants of these soldiers may help the museum to learn more about them and their service. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. For more information\, contact the museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

SUMMARY:Sunset and Full Moon Climb at Cape St. George Lighthouse

Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to view St. George Island\, the Gulf of Mexico\, and the Apalachicola Bay under the evening sky. \nThe Sunset and Full Moon Climb will begin at 6:00 p.m. and run until 8:00 p.m. The gift shop will open at 5:30 pm to begin selling tickets. \nThe sun will set at 6:29 p.m. and the “Snow” or “Trapper’s” moon will rise at 6:37 p.m. on February 16. The February full moon is called the Snow Moon because while January is traditionally the coldest month of the year in the northern hemisphere\, the heaviest snow usually falls a month later\, in February. It’s only natural then that the name for February’s full moon among Native American tribes of the north and east was the Full Snow Moon. To the early American colonists\, the optimal time for trapping beaver\, fox and mink was the dead of winter when these animals’ coats were at their fullest. So to them\, February’s moon was known as the Trapper’s Moon. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Parking is available in lots at either side of the park.
