SUMMARY:Pen to Paper Writers Series
DESCRIPTION:The Franklin County Public Libraries hosts another one of its popular writers’ programs entitled\, “Pen to Paper” on Monday\, March 4 at 2 pm at the Carrabelle Branch Library. This session will feature authors Tiffany Jo Howell and Sidsel ‘Sid’ McOmie. \nDuring the series authors will discuss and share the works they have written and those that are in progress. This will be followed by a question and answer session. These friendly and informal sessions are a chance to meet these area authors and ask questions about their experiences. They are open to anyone interested in learning more about these writers or the writing process. There is no charge to attend and the public is welcome. \nTiffany Howell originally hails from Minnesota but now lives with her husband and cat on Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Since her early days\, Tiffany has been telling stories of helping her friends get in trouble and instigating mischief. Maybe she never grew up because children still gravitate to her wherever she goes. Perhaps this is why writing in an easy voice for the younger ones comes naturally to her. Tiffany is the author of The Finder’s Tales: Marco. Tiffany has almost finished working on a new book. \nSid McOmie has been an avid cook for many years\,  and cooks not only for friends and family\, but also occasionally as an in-house chef. She has authored and published three cookbooks and should have at least two more books published if not more by February. Her currently published cookbooks include Nibbles and Bits\, Simple Shrimp Recipes\, and Hygge Danish Food. The last showcases her Danish background and the food she learned cooking with her mother. Sid says\, “The recipes in the book are mostly the ones that I learned from my mother and ones that I’ve been making most of my adult life. They’re the everyday meals many Danes eat.” \nThis series is sponsored by the Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries. For more information on this event\, please contact the Carrabelle Branch Library at (850) 697-2366.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Canine Military Veterans and Cartoonists in WWII
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting two special exhibits throughout the month of March – one to honor our country’s canine military veterans and the other to recognize the role of cartoonists in WWII.  These exhibits will open Tuesday\, March 5 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, March 30.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission but donations are gladly accepted. \nNational K9 Veterans Day\, March 13\, is a day set aside to recognize and honor the service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs. Dogs served in many capacities in wartime\, including in WWII\, as messengers and sentry dogs\, but did you know that they were also trained for mine and explosive detection\, finding injured soldiers and flushing enemy troops from hidden spaces? Dogs’ keen sense of smell and acute hearing made them valuable assets in war and today for national security. This exhibit will recognize the important service that they loyally performed during WWII. \nDuring WWII\, the press was essential for keeping the public informed in wartime\, but cartoonists and cartoons played a unique role in bringing the war to citizens. The cartoon figure and possibly America’s earliest meme\, Kilroy\, is actually engraved on the WWII Memorial in the National Mall in Washington DC.  Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will share images of familiar characters like Private Snafu\, Donald Duck\, Willie and Joe\, and Kilroy who all play a prominent part in WWII history. The exhibit will also present the works of cartoonists like Bill Maudlin and Dave Breger\, as well as the animated works by Disney and Warner Brothers that served as both propaganda for citizens and training for servicemen.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Tate’s Hell\, the Legend\, Tate's Hell\, the Place
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is thrilled to announce the extension of its popular exhibit\, “Tate’s Hell\, the Legend. Tate’s Hell\, the Place”. Originally scheduled to conclude on April 27\, the exhibit will now be open for visitors through June 30 due to overwhelming demand and community interest. The museum is open Wednesdays from 12 noon to 5 pm\, Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays 12 noon to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission; donations are gratefully accepted to defray costs. \nSince its opening on Saturday\, March 16\, the exhibit has interested audiences with its exploration of the legend of Tate’s Hell\, shedding light on the misadventures and fate of Cebe Tate\, and the intriguing origins behind the name of Tate’s Hell State Forest. Visitors have been treated to a captivating array of wildlife and landscape photography captured within Tate’s Hell by esteemed photographers John Spohrer and Jon Johnson. Their stunning images vividly depict the unique beauty and mystique of this legendary locale. \nAdditionally\, the exhibit showcases cultural treasures such as the iconic ballad\, “The Ballad of Tate’s Hell” by Will McLean\, performed by the talented Frank Lindamood. Also featured is the 1983 short film\, “A Tale of Tate’s Hell”\, produced by the FSU Department of Communications\, offering an unique interpretation on the Tate’s Hell legend. \n“In the folk region\, people are wedded to the land\, and the land holds memories. The people themselves possess identity and ancestry\, through continuous occupation of the same soil. Local events can flower into legend and ballad and proverb\, and village ways can harden into custom\,” remarked Richard M. Corson in American Folklore\, a sentiment that resonates deeply with the essence of this exhibit.

SUMMARY:Spring Speaker Series: Empire Mica by Grayson Shepard
DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola Area Historical Society (AAHS) will be presenting a program on Empire Mica by Grayson Shepard as part of their Spring Speaker Series on Saturday\, March 16\, 2024 at 4:00 pm at the Raney Carriage House\, 126 Market Street\, Apalachicola\, FL. \nAccording to Florida’s Division of Historical Resources\, “The HMS Empire Mica was a 465-foot-long British tanker in use during WWII. Built in 1941\, it carried fuel for the Royal Air Force. On June 29th\, 1942\, it was torpedoed by a German U-boat and sank 21 miles due south of Florida’s Cape San Blas in 110 feet of water. Today\, the wreck is a shadow of the magnificent tanker it once represented after the Coast Guard bombed the stern and bridge to reduce threat to navigation.” \nThese Speakers events are part of a well-established and popular series by the Apalachicola Area Historical Society with speakers through May on Saturdays\, mid-month\, at 4pm in the Raney House Carriage House. Local and tourist history enthusiasts have gathered for these informative talks for a number of years. Previous speakers have spoken about Apalachicola’s predominantly African American North Side\, Territorial City St Joseph\, Early Maps of the area\, Niles Register Florida History\, the ice delivery industry\, Cemetery Preservation\, Apalachicola Historic Squares and more. \nSeating is limited so come early to get a spot. For more information\, please call and leave a message at (850) 653-1700\, email to AAHS.Raney@gmail.com\, or online.
