SUMMARY:Blue Moon Celebrated at Crooked River Lighthouse’s Twilight at the Tower
DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse will be hosting Twilight at the Tower on Saturday\, May 30 from 7:00-10:00 pm ET in Carrabelle\, FL. This special event invites visitors to enjoy after-hours museum visits\, gift shop browsing\, a glowing bonfire\, tower climbs\, and the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach as evening falls and the Blue moon rises. \nThe phrase “Blue Moon” goes back hundreds of years. One of the earliest mentions was in a pamphlet in the 1500s that joked people would believe anything their minister told them—even that the Moon was blue. The phrase was meant to describe something obviously ridiculous. Today\, we use “once in a blue moon” to describe something rare\, and in astronomy it simply means an extra full moon in a cycle\, most often the second full moon in one month. \nThe Keeper’s House Museum will be open for after-hours tours featuring the lighthouse’s original Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris\, France. The lighthouse gift shop will offer a variety of unique nautical gifts and souvenirs\, and the Beacon Bistro will have delicious baked goodies\, popcorn\, hot chocolate\, and s’more kits available by donation. A glowing bonfire will create a perfect atmosphere for folks to kick back\, relax and enjoy the evening. As the sky shifts from watercolor hues to deep evening blues\, visitors are welcome to bring a chair and unwind on the lighthouse grounds. \nVisitors seeking an unforgettable experience can enjoy twilight tower climbs to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast. From the top\, climbers will be treated to panoramic views of St. George Sound\, Carrabelle Beach and the beautiful colors of the evening sky. Climb reservations are encouraged. Evening climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals and cost $6 for the public. Climbs are free for current members and those 12 and under with a ticketed adult. All climbers must be at least 44 inches tall.  Climb reservations are available in the gift shop or online.

SUMMARY:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum Commemorates D-Day
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit commemorating the anniversary of D-Day. This exhibit will be on display from Tuesday\, June 2 until Saturday\, July 18.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nCamp Gordon Johnston was established in 1942 in Carrabelle to train entire infantry divisions\, including the U. S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division and their support units\, in amphibious warfare. That training and the men who received it would be put to the test on the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy\, France on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. The first amphibian infantry assault teams to arrive on French soil were from the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach. The D-Day invasion\, the largest seaborne invasion in history\, included over 100\,000 Allied troops. \nThe exhibit will include personal papers\, historic photos\, and artifacts belonging to Capt. John E. Mellen\, generously shared by his family. Capt. Mellen commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and served with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston through the end of the war. The 818th trained at Camp Gordon Johnston in late 1943 and early 1944 before deploying to England in preparation for the Normandy invasion. On June 6\, 1944\, they landed on Utah Beach as part of the 1st Engineer Special Brigade\, supporting the 4th Infantry Division. For this the 818th received a Meritorious Unit Citation and Croix de Guerre with palm and five members received Bronze Stars. \nAdded to the exhibit this year is the story of Victor Lucek of the 3891st Quartermaster Truck Company\, who landed with his truck on Utah Beach on June 7\, 1944\, D+1. His experiences offer another viewpoint on the huge logistical effort and bravery required during the Normandy invasion. The exhibit also features interviews with members of the 4th Infantry Division and accounts from German defenders. These\, along with other tributes to D-Day\, offer a more complete perspective on this historic event. The museum’s three WWII military vehicles will also be displayed. \nAn Army training short film\, captured by the U.S. Army Signal Corps\, documents the D-Day preparations as they happened at Camp Gordon Johnston in March 1943. This video of amphibious assault training on Carrabelle Beach will play continuously during the day. These training exercises were to be the last training before troops shipped out to England.

SUMMARY:Apalachicola Area Historical Society Presents Exploring the Roots of American Music with Corey Hall
DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola Area Historical Society (AAHS) invites the public to an intimate musical experience as acclaimed guitarist and storyteller Corey Hall brings his deep well of Blues and American folk traditions to the Apalachicola Yacht Club pavilion for a special afternoon performance on Thursday\, June 11 at 4:00 pm. (Please note the new location.) There is no charge for this program; donations are warmly welcomed. As communities across the nation celebrate America’s 250th year\, this program offers an opportunity to explore the rich musical traditions that helped shape the American story. \nSet in the warm\, open-air ambiance of the Yacht Club’s pavilion\, audiences can experience Corey Hall’s music as it was meant to be heard – up close and steeped in history. Known for his expressive guitar work and deep knowledge of American roots traditions\, Hall blends performance with storytelling\, sharing the cultural threads that shape his sound. \nGuests can expect a mix of Delta blues\, folk picking\, and roots-driven improvisation\, along with commentary on the origins of these styles\, the musicians who influenced them\, and their lasting impact. Drawing from traditions born of field hollers\, African rhythms\, and storytelling\, Hall traces how these early forms evolved into the distinctly American sound recognized today. \nWith a focus on the Gulf Coast’s role in this musical evolution\, the program highlights how these traditions continue to resonate along Florida’s Forgotten Coast and beyond. More than a performance\, it offers a living connection to the past\, illustrating how these enduring sounds have been preserved\, adapted\, and passed down through generations – a fitting tribute as America commemorates 250 years of history\, culture\, and shared heritage. \nCorey Hall is a Gulf Coast-based singer-songwriter whose work reflects the musical heritage of Northwest Florida and the American South. Influenced by blues legends such as Mississippi John Hurt and R. L. Burnside\, Hall blends traditional blues\, folk\, roots music\, and original compositions into a sound that feels timeless and regionally grounded. His album\, “The Bay County Blues\,” and recognition in regional and international blues competitions reflect his commitment to preserving these traditions. \nThis program is part of a well-established and popular series by the Apalachicola Area Historical Society. The AAHS is a member supported 501(c) 3 non-profit dedicated to illuminating and advancing greater understanding of the cultural history of Apalachicola and its surroundings. This program is funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. For details\, email AAHS.Raney@gmail.com\, leave a message at (850) 653-1700.
