DESCRIPTION:Join the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve at the St George Island State Park Saturday\, September 26\, 2020 for an in-person BioBlitz. A BioBlitz\, is an intense period of biological surveying to record the living species within a designated area. Learn about the area’s plants\, animals and marine life as Reserve educators lead participants in finding and identifying species in three distinct habitats-the bay side\, an oyster bar\, and the beach. Participants will receive coaching in using the Seek app and will be provided with opportunities to find and identify species in three distinct habitats on St. George Island. \nRegistration is free but required in advance. Click here to register for this free event. Proper precautions following CDC guidelines will be in place\, including hand-washing and hand sanitizer stations\, social distancing\, and mask enforcement for staff and participants. Groups are limited to 10 people and staggered throughout the day to minimize contact. As a measure of public safety\, National Estuaries Day at the Reserve – which usually draws 800 people – has moved online this year. The mission of National Estuaries Day is to connect people with the estuarine community that supports the life of thousands of species\, including us\, the humans that live off the bay. Annually in the past\, that mission was accomplished by inviting students\, families and experts alike to gather in one place for one day to share knowledge about the bay and enthusiasm for its conservation. This year\, we are taking the opportunity to expand the scope from just one day at the Apalachicola NERR Nature Center to a whole week around the entire Apalachicola Bay watershed. \nWhat: Virtual Estuaries Week Online Celebration and Remote BioBlitz\nWhen: Virtual Estuaries Week Activities – Sept. 19-26\, 2020\nLive BioBlitz at St. George Island State Park – Saturday\, Sept. 26\, 2020\, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. \nJoin us virtually for our celebration of the Estuary beginning on Sept. 19 by visiting our website. There will be video tours\, virtual field experiences\, downloadable/printable activity sheets\, and a weeklong digital BioBlitz that you can participate in by downloading the ‘iNaturalist’ app or ‘Seek by iNaturalist’ and uploading any species you find around the whole Reserve! \nFor details about the apps: \n\nSeek by iNaturalist\niNaturalist\n\nClick here to check up on the status of the BioBlitz. \nThere will be one day of in-person activities on Saturday\, Sept. 26. Registration on Eventbrite will be required in advance (Click here to register). The event will take place at St. George Island State Park from 9 a.m to 3 p.m.\, but your group’s participation in all activities will only take about two hours. Groups of no more than 10 people will visit three stations. In addition\, shoppers and visitors have the unique opportunity to climb to the top of the lighthouse for a breathtaking view of the Bay. DESCRIPTION:The Crooked River Lighthouse is bringing back their popular Full Moon Lighthouse Climb events starting Sunday\, August 2nd\, from 7-10 pm in Carrabelle\, FL. Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to see the gorgeous natural surroundings of the St. George Sound\, Carrabelle Beach\, and Dog Island\, under the night sky at this special Crooked River Lighthouse evening climb. \nThe Full Moon for August is known as the Sturgeon Moon. Other names for this Full Moon include ”Full Green Corn Moon\,” signaling that the corn was nearly ready for harvest\, “Wheat Cut Moon\,” “Moon When All Things Ripen\,” and ”Blueberry Moon.” (Credit: Farmer’s Almanac). \nAt this month’s event\, visitors will also be able to enjoy the glow of the sunset as well of the moonrise. Visitors can climb to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast\, Crooked River Lighthouse\, to see breathtaking views of the bay under the glow of the beautiful setting sun and the rising full moon. Cost is just $8. The museum and gift shop will also be open for guests’ enjoyment. All climbers must be 44 inches tall. Please note\, there will be no live music at this month’s event.
