SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Florida Seafood Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Volunteer Board of Directors of the Florida Seafood Festival would like to thank everyone who has inquired about the 2020 Festival. Sadly\, we are writing this letter to let everyone know that the 57th Florida Seafood Festival has been postponed until November 5th & 6th 2021. \nThis decision was an equally hard and easy decision to make. We are ten volunteers. No one can say they love the Florida Seafood Festival more than we do. Most of us have been on the board for many years donating our time to make the Florida Seafood Festival the best it can be. We do it for the love we have of this community and the Festival. After we\, and the community\, fought so hard to hold the 2018 Florida Seafood Festival just 3 short weeks after Hurricane Michael we felt nothing could be harder\, this decision was. \nWith the state of affairs of COVID-19\, the safety of our Community and Patrons is\, and always has been\, priority number one.  Currently\, the state and CDC are recommending no large gatherings of over 10 people. There is a big gap between 10 people and 24\,000 people. Also\, we do not have the funds to put into place the safety measures some of the major theme parks have done to allow them to be open safely.  Please understand if there was any way possible that we could have safely held this year’s festival we would be pushing forward with the determination we have always had. \nWe will start planning for next years Festival in the coming months to make it bigger and better. We know that this is not just a Festival to most of our patrons\, it is a homecoming for Franklin County as well. The men and women who have served on this board over the past 57 years are some of the most dedicated volunteers in our community. Please\, everyone understand the situation that we were faced with and are continuing to face. We say again this was a hard decision because of the love we have for the Festival and the community and an easy decision because of the love we have for the community. \nWe thank all of you who have visited our community every year for the past 56 years on the first weekend of November and we invite you to still visit our community in 2020 as the businesses and restaurants are open for your enjoyment. \nWe also would like to thank our sponsors for supporting us all these years. To all of our Non-profit groups\, volunteers and vendors we thank you.  This truly is a community event and it truly takes a village. We are so blessed to have such an amazing village like Franklin County. This isn’t goodbye\, this is “See ya next year”\, so we want to invite everyone to the 57th Florida Seafood Festival on November 5th and 6th 2021. \nSincerely\,\nThe All-Volunteer Board of Directors\nFlorida Seafood Festival

SUMMARY:Virtual Full Moon Climb
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be going live from the top of the lighthouse for a virtual sunset/full moon climb. We hope you’ll join us on Facebook to view the sunset and moon rise. The October full moon is called the Halloween Hunter’s Blue Moon. It is called the Hunter’s Moon because Native American tribes began hunting when the deer had fattened themselves over the course of the summer\, and hunters tracked and killed prey by autumn moonlight\, stockpiling food for the coming winter. It will also be a Blue Moon as it is the second full moon in October\, giving it that designation. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. (weather permitting – if it’s not too cloudy or rainy)

SUMMARY:Virtual Full Moon Climb
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Facebook live for a virtual full moon climb – The October full moon is often referred to as the Full Hunter’s Moon\, Blood Moon\, or Sanguine Moon. Many moons ago\, Native Americans named this bright moon for obvious reasons. The leaves are falling from trees\, the deer are fattened\, and it’s time to begin storing up meat for the long winter ahead. Because the fields were traditionally reaped in late September or early October\, hunters could easily see fox and other animals that come out to glean from the fallen grains. Probably because of the threat of winter looming close\, the Hunter’s Moon is generally accorded with special honor\, historically serving as an important feast day in both Western Europe and among many Native American tribes. The Cape

SUMMARY:Apalachicola NERR Hosts Virtual Estuaries Week for 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola NERR welcomes Franklin County to attend Virtual National Estuaries Day this September! As a measure of public safety\, National Estuaries Day at the Reserve – which usually draws 800 people – has moved online this year. The mission of National Estuaries Day is to connect people with the estuarine community that supports the life of thousands of species\, including us\, the humans that live off the bay. Annually in the past\, that mission was accomplished by inviting students\, families and experts alike to gather in one place for one day to share knowledge about the bay and enthusiasm for its conservation. This year\, we are taking the opportunity to expand the scope from just one day at the Apalachicola NERR Nature Center to a whole week around the entire Apalachicola Bay watershed. \nWhat: Virtual Estuaries Week Online Celebration and Remote BioBlitz\nWhen: Virtual Estuaries Week Activities – Sept. 19-26\, 2020\nLive BioBlitz at St. George Island State Park – Saturday\, Sept. 26\, 2020\, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. \nJoin us virtually for our celebration of the Estuary beginning on Sept. 19 by visiting our website.
