SUMMARY:Event Postponed: Post Modern Jazz Trio at Rio Carrabelle
DESCRIPTION:Rio Carrabelle’s music series continues on Saturday\, January 28 at 7:30 pm with a collaboration of exceptional music and stunning art in the historic Rio Carrabelle. This week Rio will be delighted by the sounds of the talented Post Modern Jazz Trio. This dynamic jazz trio is made up of Florida A&M University Music Professor and bassist\, Brian Hall\, along with Joe Goldberg on saxophone and piano and Nygel Anderson on drums. Both Joe and Nygel are from FSU. \nThe Post-Modern Jazz Trio is steeped in the Jazz Tradition. They’ve studied and performed the music of the last century. In the process they have come upon some fundamental shifts in their understanding of the music as a whole. They bring the music of their youth and all their various musical experiences to meet the “jazz tradition”. According to the Post Modern Jazz Trio\, “We converse with it in a way that both acknowledges and upholds it – secretly crossing our fingers behind our backs and whispering to each other all the while. We shift gears up and down\, sideways & slantways. We’re never quite sure where we’ll end up. But isn’t that the point?” \nRio Carrabelle is a unique non-profit art and music destination located in the heart of Carrabelle. Additional music series performances continue on Saturday\, February 11 with composer and vocalist\, Darryl Tookes\, returning from NYC. And then rounding out the concert series will be Hot Mess with some cool Blues & Zydeco on Saturday\, February 25. Guests will enjoy these talented musical artists while being surrounded by the works of some gifted visual artists. Paintings by Roger Leonard are featured along with works by the talented Bill Owen\, Joe Kotzman\, Pat Moore\, and Bo May. Art by Roger Leonard is on display through the end of February. \nAll musical performances will be enjoyed in an intimate Cabaret-style listening room and are BYOB. Performances will be held at 7:30 pm. Seating is limited. Tickets are on sale online for $22. The historic Rio Carrabelle is located at 102 St James Ave (Hwy 98) in Carrabelle\, FL. This concert series is sponsored in part by INConcert\, the Ilse Newell Fund for the Performing Art.

SUMMARY:FSUCML Lecture Series feat. Dr. Jerry Lorenz - "Florida Bay's Pink Wading Birds"
DESCRIPTION:Over a thirty-year career\, Dr. Lorenz has studied the ecology of Florida Bay focusing on Roseate Spoonbills and\, more recently\, on American Flamingos. He will present some of his scientific findings regarding both species with a focus on conservation and restoration of the Everglades and Florida Bay. With Flamingos\, he presents why the state of Florida considered them an introduced species and why historic and recent data indicates that they are indeed native to Florida. He discusses that Florida Bay was historically the major habitat for Flamingos in the state and why they warrant legal protection. Using Spoonbills as an ecosystem indicator species he reviews the reasons for the decline of this species since the early 1980s; what Everglades Restoration is doing and should be doing for this species and why climate change and sea level rise are further threatening what was once the sole nesting place for this species in Florida. \nJerome J. Lorenz’s research focuses on the impact of water management in the southern Everglades on the coastal ecosystems of Florida Bay. Specifically\, the project examines the linkages between fresh water deliveries from the Everglades\, the abundance of aquatic plants and prey fishes in the mangroves and the success of nesting Roseate Spoonbills in Florida Bay. In 2000 Jerry became Research Director at Audubon Florida’s Everglades Science Center after completion of his Ph.D. from University of Miami. He was promoted to Research Director for Audubon Florida in 2005. He currently serves as a member of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council and on the Monroe County Climate Change Advisory Council.

SUMMARY:Where the Tupelo Grows Artist Event
DESCRIPTION:This event is an opportunity to artistically interpret the environment and culture surrounding the region “Where The Tupelo Grows.”  In the United States\, the most productive area for the Tupelo tree is found in the Apalachicola River Basin in the Florida Panhandle.  The nectar made from the Nyssa ogeche Tupelo tree has such a high ratio of fructose to glucose that it does not crystallize. It is a very light\, mild-tasting honey and a highly valued crop.  The unique geography and climate of the Apalachicola River basin have led to the evolution of a culture and way of life that is found nowhere else. An area also considered by some to be the original Garden of Eden. \nAttend our opening reception on Saturday\, February 11\, 2023\, to cast your vote for your favorite work of art!
