SUMMARY:WWII Red Ball Express Truck
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle\, FL is hosting a rare opportunity to see a famed WWII Red Ball Express Truck up-close and personal as part of the last day of its African-American Servicemen special exhibit. This piece of hard working history will be on display at the museum on Saturday\, February 29\, from 11 am – 4 pm. The museum will also be screening a movie on the Red Ball Express at 1 pm. \nAfter D-Day\, the Allied military forces made a critical push from Normandy across France. Supply lines were soon stretched to their breaking point. Without ammunition\, fuel and food\, the US Army would have soon been at a standstill. A huge trucking effort called the “Red Ball Express” was created and played a key role in the defeat of the Nazis. Nearly 75 percent of all Red Ball Express drivers were African American. \nThis unique event will close out Camp Gordon Johnston Museum’s month-long exhibit honoring the service of African American soldiers during WWII. There is no charge for this event and admission to the museum is free.

SUMMARY:Living Shorelines Overview for Residents
DESCRIPTION:Coastal erosion is a natural process caused by currents\, wave action\, wind\, storms and even boat wakes. The traditional methods used to harden the shoreline like seawalls and rip rap can actually often increase the rate of coastal erosion as well as remove the ability of the shoreline to carry out natural processes. \nThe Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR) will host a workshop on using Living Shorelines to combat erosion on Thursday\, February 20\, 2020\, 2:00-4:00 pm for local residents and homeowners. The workshop will discuss living shorelines vs. hardened shorelines as well as how to evaluate a shoreline by considering the physical factors such as wave energy\, prevailing wind and wave direction\, vegetation\, and soil type\, in addition to presenting living shoreline methods\, materials\, permitting\, and success stories of local living shorelines. We will also look at which types of plants are the most beneficial and visit a local living shoreline. \nThis lecture is free\, but please register in advance on our eventbrite page.

SUMMARY:The Fort at Prospect Bluff
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting an interesting history program entitled\, “The Fort at Prospect Bluff” with historian and author\, Dale Cox. It may be hard to imagine now\, but right down the road in Franklin County on a bank of the Apalachicola River is a bluff that once boasted the biggest community of escaped slaves and free black people in the country. This free program will be held Saturday\, February 15\, 2020\, at 10 am – 12 pm at C-Quarters Marina. \nThe Fort at Prospect Bluff\, built by British troops during the final months of the War of 1812\, served as a rallying point and refugee center for more than 3\,000 Red Stick Creek Indians who evacuated into Florida. The fort was also the training station for a battalion of Colonial Marines (Black/Negro Marines). Escaped slaves from Spanish Florida and the United States filled the ranks of this unit. \nWhen the war ended\, Great Britain withdrew from the Apalachicola River. They turned the massive 14 ½ acre fort over to around 80 of the former Colonial Marines and their families\, creating a community of 300-350 men\, women\, and children. From 1815-1816\, it was the largest free black settlement in North America. \nU.S. forces destroyed the fort on July 27\, 1816. The deadliest single cannon shot in American history blew up the gunpowder magazine with a devastating flash. Recent research at Prospect Bluff\, now called Fort Gadsden\, is gaining national attention. Over the past four years more discoveries have been made on and about this site than in the 60 years prior. \nHistorian and author Dale Cox will tell the story that inspired his book\, “The Fort at Prospect Bluff” and discuss his research that led to the discovery of dozens of previously unpublished accounts. Dale Cox is the author of more than one dozen books on Southern history and culture and has won numerous awards. The new book from Dale Cox offers the most detailed account in print of the 1814-1816 history and destruction of the Fort at Prospect Bluff or “Negro Fort.” Copies of the book will be available.

SUMMARY:Full Moon Climb
DESCRIPTION:The February Full Moon Climb at the Cape St. George Lighthouse on St. George Island will be held on Saturday\, February 8\, 2020.  The Sunset/Full Moon Climb will take place from 5:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and will include a light snack.  Reservation cost is $15.00 for the general public and $10.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. \nThe sun will set at 6:23 p.m. and the “Snow” moon will rise at 5:52 p.m. on February 8th. The February full moon is called the Snow moon because the heaviest snows generally fall in February.  Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. \nAfter sunset\, visitors without reservations are invited to climb to the top of the lighthouse for a breathtaking view of the full moon\, as space and time permit.  Cost is $10.00 for the general public and $5.00 for SGLA members. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive.  Parking is available in lots at either side of the park. \nBecause space is limited\, reservations are recommended.  For reservations or more information\, please contact the Lighthouse Gift Shop at (850) 927-7745.

SUMMARY:Sweet Tea on the Front Porch
DESCRIPTION:“Sweet Tea on the Front Porch” is a play in three acts. The first act\, “The Escape”\, is a drama taking place in January of 1923\, surrounding the efforts of two middle-aged women in Apalachicola to help a fugitive from injustice. The second act is a comedy\, “Pushing Up Daisies” which takes place in the summer of 1934. It continues the story of two now elderly ladies helping rid the world of evil in their own special way. The third and final act is a mystery taking place in 1946 and involves a returning son of the south and his wish to hold on to the family homeplace. Its title is “A Treasure Found”. All three acts are woven together to provide a bitter truth from our state’s history with a heavy dose of comedy and a touch of mystery as justice prevails.

SUMMARY:John Reno Jim Croce Tribute
DESCRIPTION:Discover why audiences are cheering for this Tribute to Jim Croce\, one of America’s most enduring singer-songwriters. John Reno blends acoustic guitar and vocals to capture the essence of a man whose musical gifts transcend time. John Reno\, thank you for taking us on a musical journey through time\, protecting Jim’s legacy and keeping his music alive.” – Ingrid Croce
