SUMMARY:Art Exhibition for Talented Painter\, Cal Allen
DESCRIPTION:The Gallery at Rio Carrabelle is thrilled to present an art exhibition featuring the work of talented painter\, Cal Allen in the historic art venue\, Rio Carrabelle in Carrabelle\, Florida. These beautiful works of art are on display now and the exhibition will run through the end of November. \nCal has expressed his southern heritage through his art for over 60 years. His attention to the details of the coast and his love of nature co-mingle to produce his naturalistic approach. From the lighthouses of North Carolina’s outer banks\, the marshes of coastal Georgia\, and the mudflats of Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast comes the inspiration for much of Cal’s work. \nCal is proficient in oils and watercolors but prefers working in egg tempera. He processes many pigments from local sources. Although primarily self-taught\, Cal has studied the works of the great masters as well as more contemporary artists such as Eakins\, Homer and Wyeth. Inspired by these renowned artists\, he has created his own methods to share his unique view of the world. Cal has received numerous awards and recognitions\, and his works hang in both private and corporate collections throughout this country and England. Cal also enjoys sharing his craft and vision and has taught classes in watercolor\, oil\, acrylic\, and egg tempera in Carrabelle\, Florida. \nRio Carrabelle Art Gallery is open Thursdays- Saturdays from 10 am -3 pm at 102 St. James Avenue (US Hwy 98)\, Carrabelle\, Florida. SUMMARY:Online Sci-Café: Apalachicola Bay Systems Initiative Update
DESCRIPTION:Apalachicola Bay’s oyster industry thrived for over a century\, but in 2012 the fishery collapsed. Several restoration efforts have been implemented\, but oyster populations have not recovered. In 2019\, Florida State University was awarded funding for the Apalachicola Bay System Initiative (ABSI) by Triumph Gulf Coast with the goal of gaining insight into the root causes of the oyster population demise\, understanding why the system was not recovering\, and identifying potential pathways to a healthy Bay ecosystem and oyster fishery. Principle Investigator and FSU Marine Lab Faculty Dr. Sandra Brooke give an update on the progress of the Initiative and the results of their restoration research and experiments. Devin Resko\, the Fishery Disaster Relief Program Coordinator with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission\, will give an update on FWC’s efforts to restore the oyster bars and revive the fishery for the benefit of oysters and oyster harvesters. FWC has received funds to restore the oyster reefs but must first conduct a pilot study this spring to prove to funders that restoration methods are sound. \nTo register for the virtual workshop\, go to: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/2918905838271626845. After registering\, you’ll get a confirmation email about joining the event.

Rio Carrabelle is a unique art and music destination located in beautiful downtown Carrabelle and features the artwork of local artists William Owen\, Pat Moore\, Barb Ryan\, Roger Leonard\, Bo May as well as Joe Kotzman. Visit riocarrabelle.com or on Facebook\, The Gallery at Rio Carrabelle\, for more information.

The November full moon is called the Beaver moon because at this time of year beavers are preparing for winter\, and it is the time to set beaver traps to ensure a supply of warm winter furs before the swamps freeze over. Full Moon names are attributable to Native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive.
