SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Battle of Iwo Jima
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit about the Battle of Iwo Jima. This exhibit will open Friday\, March 6 and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, March 28\, 2026. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm ET and there is no charge for admission. \nThe Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the most important and hardest-fought amphibious battles of World War II. From February 19 to March 26\, 1945\, American forces attacked the small\, heavily defended island to secure its airfields and use them to support bombing missions against Japan. Marines from the 3rd\, 4th\, and 5th Marine Divisions landed on narrow beaches under heavy artillery\, mortar\, and small arms fire and quickly faced fierce resistance. Japanese troops were dug into bunkers\, caves\, and tunnels\, making every step forward dangerous. The battle was one of the bloodiest in the Pacific\, with nearly 7\,000 Americans killed and many more wounded. After weeks of hard combat\, the island was secured and the famous flag raising on Mount Suribachi became a powerful symbol of courage and sacrifice. \nAlthough Marines led the assault\, many Army and Navy units played key support roles. The U.S. Army’s 147th Infantry Regiment helped clear the island\, and Navy Seabees repaired airfields so planes could quickly use them. Among them were several Amphibious Truck Companies—the 471st\, 473rd\, and 476th— that trained at Camp Gordon Johnston. Landing under fire\, they moved supplies\, carried ammunition\, rescued stranded equipment\, and evacuated wounded soldiers from the beaches using DUKW amphibious vehicles. These units served alongside the 4th Marine Division and took part in heavy fighting. Throughout the month\, the Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will have a special exhibit commemorating the anniversary of the Iwo Jima Battle. Displays will include photos\, video\, and artifacts including some from the Marine Corps.

SUMMARY:Apalachicola Mardi Gras Barkus Parade & Street Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Mystic Krewe of Salty Barkers will celebrate Mardi Gras Apalach-style on February 27-28\, 2026\, at Riverfront Park in Apalachicola\, FL. This beloved coastal tradition features a lively street festival and the 15th Annual Mardi Gras Barkus Parade\, a parade of costumed dogs and their people. Guests are invited to dive into the fun in festive costumes\, creative floats\, wagging tails\, and plenty of local flair. All sea lovers and their loyal sea pups are invited to swim by and enjoy this fintastic ocean adventure. \nThe 2026 theme is “Under the Sea.” Pups and their people will don costumes inspired by the wonders of the deep blue sea\, a magical ocean realm ruled by dogs. The streets will be swimming with majestic mer-dogs\, sea royalty\, pirate and their ships\, shimmering fish\, daring divers\, and maybe even a sea monster or two. The creativity and splashy spirit guests bring to this magical underwater spectacle will be a sight to see. \nThe festival kicks off with fun and frivolity on Friday\, February 27\, from 12 to 6 pm ET with the Fido-Do (a Salty Barker twist on a fais do-do). This old-fashioned Mardi Gras street event will feature live music and entertainment and of course delicious food and drinks. Participants are invited to bring their golf carts and decorate them for Saturday’s parade and stay for the new Sundown Celebration. \nOn Saturday\, February 28\, the festival continues from 10:30  to 4 pm at Riverfront Park. Guests will enjoy over 40 vendors offering a variety of food\, arts\, and crafts\, live music\, a beer and wine garden with local craft brews\, and of course the Pet Parade. Additional highlights include street entertainment\, pet and family photos\, pet adoptions through the Franklin County Humane Society and animal ambassadors from the Florida Wild Mammal Association. Other non-profit exhibitors will also be present\, along with T-shirts and Mardi Gras merchandise for purchase. \nThe 15th Annual Barkus Parade\, the big splash of the weekend\, starts at 1 pm on Saturday. The parade of decorated golf carts\, boats\, floats\, and costumed walkers – both the four-legged and two-legged kind will make waves at Riverfront Park\, wind through town\, and end back at the park to continue the raucous fun. Registration for the parade is $5 for walkers\, $25 for golf carts\, and $50 for floats. Canine companions\, of course\, are free. \nMore than just fun\, this celebration is also a fundraiser for local animal rescue organizations. The Mystic Krewe of Salty Barkers donates all proceeds to help animals in need across the Forgotten Coast. This is a joyful way to come together\, show their creativity\, and raise funds for a great cause—all with a big splash of Mardi Gras magic. \nPhoto credit: FOMO Photography

SUMMARY:Take a Virtual Ghost Walk of Apalachicola’s Historic Chestnut St. Cemetery with Dolores Roux
DESCRIPTION:The Apalachicola Area Historical Society (AAHS) invites the public to an armchair Ghost Tour of the Chestnut Street Cemetery of Apalachicola\, as part of their Spring Speaker Series. The Society has annually performed history-themed walks through the cemetery guided by local reenactors sharing the stories of some of the city’s founding mothers and fathers. However\, this Spring’s tour will be held indoors on Saturday\, February 21\, beginning at 4:00 PM at the Carriage House of the Raney House Museum located at 126 Market St. in Apalachicola. \nThe program will be hosted by past Society president and former City Librarian Caty Greene and will draw from video tours recorded by the late Dolores Roux. Dolores was a native daughter of Apalachicola and was instrumental in starting the annual cemetery tour where locals offer an historical reenactment of the tales of the men and women buried in the city’s oldest cemetery. \nDrawing from her personal memories of 20th Century Apalachicola and the stories of many of the city’s earlier townsfolk\, hearing again Dolores’ recollections of those interred in the Chestnut St Cemetery will provide an enlightening and often humorous peek into Apalachicola’s history and some of the characters that shaped it. \nThis will be a unique opportunity to take a tour from a comfortable chair and with a guide who knew Apalachicola intimately. No tickets will be required for this event\, though attendees are encouraged to arrive early as seating is limited. Admission is free\, though donations are welcomed and will support the Historical Society’s programs. \nThese Speakers events are part of a well-established and popular series by the Apalachicola Area Historical Society with monthly speakers January through May and funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. Previous programs have covered Apalachicola’s predominantly African American North Side\, Territorial City St Joseph\, Early Maps of the area\, Niles Register Florida History\, the ice delivery industry\, Cemetery Preservation\, Apalachicola Historic Squares and more.
