This exhibit will open on Tuesday\, October 7 and be on display through Saturday\, November 1.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nOperation Paperclip was the secret US campaign to move German scientists\, some of whom had Nazi records of wrongdoing\, to the US to help develop the rocket technology for defense and eventually space exploration. Keeping these human assets out of the hands of the Soviet Union as the Cold War ramped up required turning a blind eye to their pasts as operatives in the Nazi Regime. These scientists\, led by Werner Von Braun\, were key to the success of the US missions into space. \nThis exhibit is a cooperative venture between the Museum and the Challenger Learning Center in Tallahassee. The Challenger Learning Center is the K-12 Outreach Facility for the Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering. Portions of this exhibit will be presented in November at the Challenger Learning Center located at 200 S. Duval Street in Tallahassee. Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to view St. George Island\, the Gulf of Mexico and the Apalachicola bay under the evening sky. \nThe Sunset and Full Moon Climb will begin at 7:00 p.m. and run until 9:00 p.m. Fifteen-minute time slots will be allotted for each group on a first-come\, first-served basis. No advanced reservations will be made. You will purchase your tickets in the gift shop and then sign up for your 15-minute time slot with the lighthouse keeper. Up to 12 people are allowed in each 15-minute time slot. The gift shop will open at 6:30 p.m. that night to begin selling tickets. \nCost is $10.00 per climber for the general public and $7.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. Cash or credit card payments accepted. All climbers must be at least 40 inches tall to climb the tower and children must be age 13 and over to access the outside catwalk. For more information\, please contact the Lighthouse Gift Shop at 850-927-7745. \nThe sun will set at 7:19 p.m. and the “Hunter’s” moon will rise at 7:01p.m. on October 6th. This full Moon is often referred to as the “Hunter’s” Moon\, Blood Moon\, or Sanguine Moon. Many moons ago\, Native Americans named this bright moon for obvious reasons. The leaves are falling from trees\, the deer are fattened\, and it is time to begin storing up meat for the long winter ahead. Because the fields were traditionally reaped in late September or early October\, hunters could easily see fox and other animals that come out to glean from the fallen grains. Probably because of the threat of winter looming close\, the Hunter’s Moon is generally accorded with special honor\, historically serving as an important feast day in both Western Europe and among many Native American tribes. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. This special after-hours event invites visitors to enjoy the gorgeous natural surroundings of St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach as the golden sun sets below the horizon and the Hunter’s Moon or Harvest Moon rises. \nVisitors can tour the Keeper’s House Museum and see the original\, historic Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris\, France. The lighthouse gift shop will also be offering unique nautical gifts and souvenirs. Guests are welcome to bring a chair and relax on the grounds as the color of the sky goes from watercolor hues to evening blues and the first evening star appears. \nThis month’s moon is traditionally known as the Hunter’s Moon. This year it is also the Harvest Moon. It is called the Hunter’s Moon because “this is the month when game is fattening up for winter. Now is the time for hunting and laying in a store of provisions for the long months ahead. The full Moon that happens nearest to the fall equinox (September 22 or 23) always takes on the name “Harvest Moon.” Unlike other full Moons\, this full Moon rises at nearly the same time—around sunset—for several evenings in a row\, giving farmers several extra evenings of moonlight and allowing them to finish their harvests before the frosts of fall arrive.” (Credit: The Old Farmer’s Almanac). \nThose who wish to climb to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast can take part in twilight tower climbs. From the top\, climbers will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views\, the colors of the sunset\, and the glow of the rising moon. Evening climbs cost $10 and are scheduled at 15-minute intervals throughout the event. Due to limited availability\, climb reservations are strongly encouraged. Climbers must be at least 44 inches tall. Children under 12 climb free with ticketed adults. Advance tickets can be purchased in the lighthouse gift shop or online. This exhibit will be on display from Wednesday\, October 1 through Sunday\, December 28. This unique exhibit will showcase a wide variety of interesting and historical bottles that tell the story of Franklin County’s heritage\, industry\, and everyday life. Visitors can explore this special exhibit on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET\, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm ET\, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free\, with donations warmly welcomed. \nThe display will feature Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery bottle\, found on nearby St. Vincent Island\, once part of the estate of Dr. Raymond V. Pierce\, a physician and patent medicine maker. His products\, such as Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription\, Golden Medical Discovery\, and Pleasant Pellets\, made him a millionaire\, with nearly a million bottles shipped each year. He also founded the Pierce Glass Company\, which produced bottles for his own medicines and brands like Pond’s Extract and Lydia Pinkham. In 1907\, he purchased St. Vincent Island in Franklin County\, where he built a private preserve with roads\, cottages\, and imported game animals\, until his death on the island in 1914. \nOther highlights of the exhibit include Coca-Cola bottles bottled locally in Apalachicola. The Apalachicola Coca-Cola Bottling Plant\, in operation through the late 1970s\, is remembered for its classic green glass bottles embossed with “Apalachicola\, FLA” on the bottom. Today\, these bottles are sought-after collectibles. \nAlso on display are bottles from the shipwrecked SS Tarpon\, including cherry bottles and beer bottles. Visitors will also see medicine bottles once used by local midwife Tillie Miller\, local milk bottles\, as well as perfume bottles\, and other rare glass finds. All of which provide a glimpse into past daily life in Franklin County.
