SUMMARY:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum Remembers the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting an exhibit to remember the Holocaust\, Hitler’s program to commit genocide against those he deemed unworthy\, especially Europe’s Jews.  This exhibit will open Tuesday\, April 4\, and will be on display at the museum until Saturday\, April 29.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nBeginning in 1933\, the German Government established prison\, labor\, concentration\, and extermination camps throughout their territories\, including in countries they occupied before and during the war. The arrested and detained groups included Roma\, Communists\, Jehovah’s Witnesses\, homosexuals\, the disabled\, and especially Jews. Some 12 million people perished in the more than 44\,000 facilities\, ghettos\, and killing fields across Europe\, including 6 million Jews. The Museum acknowledges the need for all citizens to understand this dark period of history\, what caused it\, who perpetrated it\, and how some resisted and fought their captors. Eyewitnesses such as survivors and the soldiers that liberated these camps are aging and dying\, but many have told their stories. Visitors are invited to see this sobering exhibit and help our society remember those victims of atrocity\, prejudice\, and hate. \nThe internationally recognized date for Holocaust Remembrance Day corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar. It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. And this year will be remembered on Wed\, Apr 19\, 2023. \nCamp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located in Carrabelle\, directly across from Carrabelle Public Beach Park at 1873 Hwy 98 West. For more information\, contact the museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. \n

SUMMARY:The Susan Buzzett Clementson Author Series: featuring Paul Bogard
DESCRIPTION:As sea turtle nesting season begins\, the Apalachicola Library welcomes a visit from noted environmental author Paul Bogard\, who will be speaking and signing copies of his books at the Apalachicola Margaret Key Public Library on Friday\, April 7\, from 6:00-7:30 pm. \nPaul Bogard is the author of The End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light\, a finalist for the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. As an advocate for limiting the harmful effects of light pollution\, a topic relevant to our local beaches and waterways\, he has been called “the unofficial poet laureate of dark skies.” A review in the Boston Globe described The End of Night as “a lyrical\, far-reaching book. Part elegy\, part call-to-arms\, The End of Night feels like an essential addition to the literature of nature.” \nBogard’s most recent works include the edited anthology Solastalgia: An Anthology of Emotion in a Disappearing World\, the coffee table book To Know a Starry Night\, and the children’s book What if Night? He is an associate professor of English at Hamline University in Saint Paul\, Minnesota\, where he teaches environmental literature and writing. \nBogard visits as part of the Susan Buzzett Clementson Author Series\, sponsored by the Friends of the Library group PALS (Patrons of the Apalachicola Library Society) and supported by Downtown Books and Purl. The Series brings authors to the library to speak about their work. All events at the library are free and open to the public. Books are available for purchase and signing\, and light refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:FSUCML Lecture Series - Dr. Dean Grubbs (April 20th at 7:00 pm)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Dean Grubbs is a fish ecologist with >30 years of experience studying the biology and ecology of sharks and rays in coastal\, pelagic\, and deep-sea environs. Dean’s interest in sharks stems from being raised in Florida’s Gulf coast. SUMMARY:Panhandle Players present Nunsense
DESCRIPTION:Panhandle Players present Nunsense: The Mega-Musical by Dan Goggin\, April 21-23\, 2023. \nThis musical is a hilarious spoof about the misadventures of five nuns trying to manage a fundraiser. Sadly\, the rest of the sisterhood died from botulism after eating vichyssoise prepared by Sister Julia\, Child of God. Thus\, the remaining nuns – ballet-loving Sister Leo\, street-wise Sister Robert Anne\, befuddled Sister Mary Amnesia\, the Mother Superior Sister Regina\, and mistress of the novices Sister Mary Hubert – stage a talent show in order to raise the money to bury their dearly departed. With catchy songs and irreverent comedy\, Nunsense is sure to keep audiences rolling with laughter.
