SUMMARY:FSUCML Lecture Series - Dr. Evelyn Gaiser
DESCRIPTION:“Through the Looking Glass: Discovering the “hidden” clues about ecosystems from microscopic glass-encased algae.” Dr. Evelyn Gaiser\, Distinguished University Professor of Biological Sciences\, holds the George M. Barley\, Jr.\, Eminent Scholars Chair at Florida International University (FIU). She is an aquatic ecologist whose research is focused on what microscopic algae can tell us about the consequences of climate and land-use change to lakes and wetlands. She has studied the Everglades for over 25 years\, much of this time leading the Florida Coastal Everglades Long-Term Ecological Research program\, a large\, multi-disciplinary program that examines how climate change and resource management decisions interact to determine the future of the Everglades. Gaiser’s research focuses on diatoms – the tiny glass- encased algae whose beautiful ornamentation and shapes not only provide clues about ecosystem health\, but also have attracted and inspired artists for centuries. Her presentation will showcase this captivating underwater microscopic world and explain how diatoms and other “healthy” algae can provide signals of ecosystem changes. If we pay attention to these microscopic signals\, we can act to prevent further changes that can lead to the formation of “unhealthy” or harmful/toxic algae communities. The science of diagnosing the health of ecosystems from diatoms will be interwoven with images from diatom-based art exhibits developed in partnership with professional artists. Please arrive on time! The lecture will start promptly at 7:00 pm\, and the entrance gates will close at 7:30 pm. Thank you!

SUMMARY:FSU Coastal and Marine Lab for An Evening on the Edge of the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Come join the FSU Coastal and Marine Lab for An Evening on the Edge of the Sea to learn about the wondrous sea life along our pristine shores and shallows. The evening kicks off with a brief overview of local ecology\, followed by a walk into the exposed tidal flats to see an array of fascinating creatures. \nParticipating in field experiences is one way in which we humans connect with the natural world. By observing the intricate relationships creatures have with one another and with the habitats that are their homes\, we increase our understanding\, appreciation\, and support of nature. Unleash your creativity by connecting with nature through field exploration\, writing\, or art. It’s good for your health and well-being and it is a two way street because when people bond with the natural world through creative activities\, they care more about and protect their local environment and wild places. \nEdge of the Sea workshops take place at the FSU Coastal & Marine Laboratory in St. Teresa on September 14 and 28. The programs start at 5:30 PM and end at 7:30 PM (unless otherwise indicated)\, taking full advantage of daylight savings time. The cost is $15 per person\, paid at the event (cash or check). Class size is limited to 20 people. The minimum age is 7 years old. No upper limit at all! We do ask that children between 7-13 are accompanied by a paying adult. \nWhat to bring: Old sneakers or other close-toed/heel shoes. No sandals. Bug Spray\nRegister online

SUMMARY:September Sunset and Full Moon Climb at Cape St. George Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The September Sunset and Full Moon Climb at the Cape St. George Lighthouse on St. George Island will be held on Tuesday\, September 17\, 2024. Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to view St. George Island\, the Gulf of Mexico and the Apalachicola bay under the evening sky. \nThe Sunset and Full Moon Climb will begin at 7:00 p.m. and run until 9:00 p.m. Fifteen-minute time slots will be allotted for each group on a first come\, first served basis. No advanced reservations will be taken. You will purchase your tickets in the gift shop and then sign up for your 15-minute time slot with the lighthouse keeper. Up to 12 persons allowed in each 15-minute time slot. The gift shop will open at 6:30 p.m. to begin selling tickets. \nCost is $10.00 per climber for the general public and $7.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. Cash or credit card payments accepted. All climbers must be at least 40 inches tall to climb the tower and children must be age 13 and over to access the outside catwalk. For more information\, please contact the Lighthouse Gift Shop at 850-927-7745. \nThe sun will set at 7:42 p.m. and the “Harvest” moon will rise at 7:38 p.m. on September 17th. The September full moon is called the Harvest moon because Native American tribes began harvesting their staple foods\, such as corn\, pumpkins\, squash\, beans\, and rice at this time. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Parking is available in lots at either side of the park.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: Operation Market Garden at Camp Gordon Johnston
DESCRIPTION:Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit on Operation Market Garden. This exhibit will be on display at the museum from Tuesday\, October 1 until Saturday\, November 2.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are gladly accepted. \nOperation Market Garden (September 17th – 27th\, 1944) was the attempt to establish control of the bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem on the border of Germany and the Netherlands. This involved the combined efforts of the First Allied Airborne and the XXX Corps of the British 2nd Army. The battle was unsuccessful for a variety of reasons\, including the dependence on a single raised highway the ground forces had to use to link up with airborne troops (US\, British and Polish) dropped at the three bridges. \nThis exhibit presents the military commanders from both the Allied and the German forces\, and presents information of the Horsa and Waco gliders\, as well as the Douglas C47 Skytrain aircraft used to bring troops and equipment from England. \nThe battle was commemorated in “A Bridge Too Far”\, the 1977 film.  “Band of Brothers”\, a miniseries from HBO in 2001\, also depicted the 101st Airborne’s part in this battle. They landed near Eindhoven and Veghel.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: “Shells and Shards”
DESCRIPTION:The Carrabelle History Museum is presenting a special exhibit\, “Shells & Shards”. This unique exhibit delves into the rich prehistoric history of Carrabelle\, showcasing intricate Native American pottery shards and shells that tell the stories of ancient cultural practices and daily life. This exhibit will be on display from Wednesday\, October 2 through Saturday\, October 27. The museum is open Wednesdays from 12 noon to 5 pm\, Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays 12 noon to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission; donations are gratefully accepted to defray costs. \nEvery piece in this exhibit tells a story. From the shells that reveal the seafood consumed by the area’s early inhabitants to the tools crafted from discarded items\, such as conch shells repurposed into farming hoes\, these fragments come together to form a rich mosaic of our shared heritage. \nThe exhibit highlights the fascinating artifacts from Carrabelle’s earliest inhabitants\, particularly those from the Apalachee tribes. These prehistoric people lived in numerous villages along the shore of St. George Sound and the local rivers over two thousand years ago\, with over 40\,000 tribal members residing between the Apalachicola and Aucilla Rivers. \nArchaeologists have unearthed evidence of villages\, middens (ancient garbage piles)\, and burial grounds within Carrabelle’s city limits\, suggesting the area was an important trade port due to its natural deep water harbor at the confluence of three rivers. The “Shells & Shards” exhibit shares the lives of Carrabelle’s “first people.”

SUMMARY:Night of the Living Dead
DESCRIPTION:Night of the Living Dead™ Live is a fun and hilarious re-imagining of George A. Romero’s legendary classic. Set in 1968 and presented in all black and white\, it literally feels like the film has been brought to life and placed onstage. The play lovingly examines the movie itself\, the period in which it was made\, and the film’s undying influence on the horror genre.Through a series of multiple endings\, the characters are all faced with different issues and challenges while desperately trying to survive the night. However\, their contrasting personalities and agendas always seem to prevent the group from working together. Which leaves us all wondering: Could anyone survive a night of the living dead?

SUMMARY:Author and Historian Robert Jacob to Present on the Pirates of Florida
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries (FFCPL) is thrilled to announce an exciting event featuring author and historian Robert Jacob. On Monday\, October 7\, at 2:00 PM ET\, Jacob will deliver an engaging presentation about the Pirates of Florida at the Eastpoint branch\, located at 160 Hickory Dip Road\, Eastpoint\, FL. \nRobert Jacob\, an award-winning author known for his expertise in pirate history\, will share tales of daring adventures\, treasure hunts\, and legends. He will draw from his books\, A Pirate’s Life in the Golden Age of Piracy\, Pirates of the Florida Coast and Blackbeard: The Truth Revealed. His hour-long presentation will explore the truths\, myths\, and legends of Florida’s pirates and will be both entertaining and educational. Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase signed copies of his books. \nFlorida’s pirate history is rich and colorful\, with stories of pirates plundering its coasts\, cities\, and shipping lanes from Key West to Pensacola and beyond. Robert Jacob’s presentation will delve into these tales\, separating fact from fiction\, including the stories of the legendary José Gaspar and the pirates of the West Coast. \nRobert Jacob’s lifelong passion for history led to his induction into the International Pirate Hall of Fame. His research revealed much of the historical record was contradictory and incorrect. In 2018\, after a ten-year quest for accurate information on pirates\, he published his first book\, A Pirate’s Life in the Golden Age of Piracy. \nThe Fall Program Series is packed with exciting events\, including Storytimes\, STEM programs\, Adult Crafternoons and more. Plus don’t miss the regularly scheduled programs including Eastpoint Book Chat on the 1st Tuesday at 1:30 pm\, Carrabelle Book Chat on the 1st Friday at 1:30 pm\, the Eastpoint Writer’s Forum on the 3rd Wednesday at 1:00 pm and Tech Help on the 4th Tuesday at 1:00 pm at both branches.

SUMMARY:Fall Program Series With Fun Story Time
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Franklin County Public Libraries (FFCPL) invite families from across the region to kick off the Fall Program Series with fun Story Time events at the Eastpoint Branch Library. This special program is scheduled for Tuesday\, October 8\, at 3:30 PM\, at the Eastpoint Branch\, 160 Hickory Dip Rd\, Eastpoint\, FL. Best of all\, all library programs are free and open to the public\, with no registration or library card required! \nThe Eastpoint Story Time event will feature the beloved children’s book “The Little Ghost Who Was A Quilt” by Riel Nason. However\, one Halloween\, he has a unique experience that only happens because he’s a quilt\, helping him realize it’s OK to be different. After the book is read\, visitors will make themed crafts: DIY Ghost Hand Puppets. The program will be filled with engaging storytelling and crafts\, providing a time of fun that will ignite a love for reading in young minds. The whole family is invited to participate in the activities\, which are designed to build pre-reading skills and encourage social interaction in an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere. This event is best suited for those 2-6 years old. \nThis event is just one of many in the Fall Program Series sponsored by the FFCPL.
