SUMMARY:Sunset and Full Moon Climb at St. George Island Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The January Sunset and Full Moon Climb at the Cape St. George Lighthouse on St. George Island will be held on Friday\, January 6\, 2023.  Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to view St. George Island\, the Gulf of Mexico\, and Apalachicola Bay under the evening sky. \nThe Sunset and Full Moon Climb will begin at 5:30 p.m. and run until 7:30 p.m.  Fifteen-minute time slots will be allotted for each group on a first-come\, first-served basis. No advanced reservations will be taken.  You will purchase your tickets in the gift shop and then sign up for your 15-minute time slot with the lighthouse keeper. Up to 12 persons are allowed in each 15-minute time slot. The gift shop will open at 5:00 pm to begin selling tickets. \nThe cost is $10.00 per climber for the general public and $7.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. Cash or credit card payments are accepted. All climbers must be at least 40 inches tall to climb the tower and children must be age 13 and over to access the outside catwalk.  For more information\, please contact the Lighthouse Gift Shop at 850-927-7745. \nThe sun will set at 5:54 p.m. and the “Wolf” moon will rise at 5:40 p.m. on January 6th. The January full moon is called the Wolf moon because wolves often hunt at night and the howling of wolves could be heard outside Indian villages.  As such\, their howling became associated with nightfall and particularly\, the moon amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter. Thus\, the name for January’s full moon. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive.  Parking is available in lots on either side of the park.

SUMMARY:Ghost Trap Rodeo
DESCRIPTION:This angler-led restoration project\, designed by Ocean Aid 360 and Coastal Conservation Association\, funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF)\, is built on the belief that shallow water anglers – tailing redfish stalkers\, mullet net assassins\, beachfront pass crab casters\, and mangrove snook pluggers – know their local waters as well or better than anyone. The Ghost Trap Rodeo is an opportunity to show what you know\, to find and remove derelict crab traps\, which catch and kill unchecked\, and other forms of marine debris that negatively impact our fishery. This tournament is a great opportunity to connect with fellow watermen and water women while improving marine habitat and to compete for fishing and boating prizes donated by well-known sponsors. \nThe Ghost Trap Rodeo promotes community awareness of marine debris challenges facing Florida’s inshore fishery\, mobilizing thousands of recreational and commercial angler volunteers for the detection and retrieval of ghost traps\, abandoned fishing gear\, and other types of man-made solid waste. Contestants provide a species bycatch inventory and approximate location of debris hotspots.

SUMMARY:Jerry Hurley Signing at Margaret Key Library
DESCRIPTION:A celebrated local favorite\, Mr. Jerry Hurley will be speaking and signing copies of his book at the Apalachicola Margaret Key Public Library on Thursday\, January 19 from 6-7:30 pm.\nWildcrafting and Other Stories I Share Only With My Friends records tales of Hurley’s youth growing up in Appalachia. The short story collection is made up of 36 poems and stories\, which recount often humorous events from Hurley’s life\, and the colorful personalities of his family and friends. A great-grandmother made and sold moonshine\, while another grandmother became a Deputy Sheriff. Says Hurley\, “Wildcrafting is a rollicking romp back in time\, and while regional in nature\, these stories transcend their Appalachian Mountain setting and will speak powerfully to many Americans who grew up in the 50s and 60s.” Do not miss this fantastic opportunity for a meet & greet with this well-known author! \n\nAuthor presentation\nQ & A with the author\nBooks for sale\nBook signing\nRefreshments\n\nThis event is open to the public\, with no admission required.
