This will be the final chance to see an art exhibition in our area featuring these two talents artists\, as they prepared to move to Chicago. \nThe exhibition will finish with a closing reception\, “Celebration: A Farewell Party for Josefa Benavides & Joe Kotzman” on Saturday\, August 13 from 6-9 pm at Rio Carrabelle. The Apalachicola Area Historical Society has published the second edition of this book with the permission of her heirs. The illustrations and introductory text have been updated. In honor of this republication\, the Apalachicola Area Historical Society and the John Gorrie Museum State Park are hosting a celebratory Tribute to Vivian Sherlock on Saturday\, July 16 at 4:00 pm at the John Gorrie State Museum\, 46 6th Street\, Apalachicola\, FL. There will be presentations by James Hargrove and Caty Greene. Please come and thank Vivian’s children\, a couple should be in attendance. \nDr. John Gorrie became a pioneer in the field of air conditioning and refrigeration by inventing a mechanical device that produced ice and improved room ventilation (what we now call air conditioning). He is honored with a statue in the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall\, in Washington\, D.C. \nBio of Vivian Sherlock (1915-2017)\nVivian was born in Apalachicola\, Florida on June 26\, 1915 to parents Dwight Ione Marshall\, Sr. and Ida Maud (Baxter) Marshall. She graduated from Chapman High School in Apalachicola in June 1932\, from Florida State College for Women in June 1936\, and from Florida State University with a Master’s Degree in 1947. \nVivian was a Renaissance woman. In addition to being a strong and supportive mother\, she was an inspiring teacher\, a prolific writer and storyteller\, a dedicated historian\, and a dynamic artist. She wrote in a variety of different formats\, including several plays\, numerous magazine articles\, a regional cookbook and the authoritative biography of Dr. John Gorrie (The Fever Man). She maintained a long term commitment to promoting the history of North Florida both with her writing\, her entertaining stories of her early life in Apalachicola and her leadership in the Florida Historical Society.

SUMMARY:C-Quarters Youth Fishing Tournament
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, over 200 kids fished the tournament with some traveling as far away as Louisiana. This year we expect even more to join the fun and fishing activities. Friday evening\, prior to Saturday’s fishing day\, all entries in the tournament must attend a Fishing Clinic taught by the Dock Master of C-Quarters Marina\, Millard Collins. They are instructed on how to tie knots\, tie on hooks\, and overall safety while fishing. At the completion of the clinic\, each one receives a rod and reel\, a tee shirt\, hat\, and bait. Rod and reels are furnished by FishFloridatag.org. \nThere are nine categories of fish with three places in each category. There will be trophies awarded for each category. On Saturday morning\, the kids can fish from docks or\, if they can go out on a boat\, they are allowed to fish the Carrabelle River up to Dog Island. There will be a weighmaster available all day. \nLunch will be provided to the kids (Hot dogs\, baked beans\, chips\, and cokes) while the officials determine the tournament winners. \nAll participants must be registered prior to the tournament.

DESCRIPTION:The July Sunset and Full Moon Climb at the Cape St. George Lighthouse on St. George Island will be held on Wednesday\, July 13\, 2022. Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to view St. George Island\, the Gulf of Mexico\, and the Apalachicola Bay under the evening sky. \nThe Sunset and Full Moon Climb will begin at 8:30 p.m. and run until 10:30 p.m. Fifteen-minute time slots will be allotted for each group on a first-come\, first-served basis. No advanced reservations will be taken. You will purchase your tickets in the gift shop and then sign up for your 15-minute time slot with the lighthouse keeper. Up to 12 persons are allowed in each 15-minute time slot. The gift shop will open at 8:00 pm to begin selling tickets. \nCost is $10.00 per climber for the general public and $7.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. Cash or credit card payments are accepted. All climbers must be at least 40 inches tall to climb the tower and children must be age 13 and over to access the outside catwalk. For more information\, please contact the Lighthouse Gift Shop at 850-927-7745. \nThe sun will set at 8:41 p.m. and the “Buck” moon will rise at 9:09 p.m. on July 13. The July full moon is called the Buck Moon because buck deer start growing velvety hair-covered antlers in July. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes\, most notably the Algonquin\, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons. \nThe Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park at the center of St. George Island\, where Island Drive (the road off the bridge) ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Parking is available in lots at either side of the park.

DESCRIPTION:Visitors can enjoy this opportunity to see the gorgeous natural surroundings of the St. George Sound and Carrabelle Beach under the glow of the rising full moon at the Crooked River Lighthouse in Carrabelle\, Florida. \nGuests can also visit the free Keeper’s House Museum and browse inside the Lighthouse Gift Shop for unique nautical gifts and souvenirs. Visitors can also enjoy the glowing fire pit (weather permitting). Bring a chair and enjoy the evening. \nThe climb to the top of the tallest Forgotten Coast lighthouse rewards bold climbers with breathtaking views of the bay. All climbers must be at least 44 inches tall. Advance reservations are required for those who wish to climb the lighthouse tower during this event by calling the Lighthouse gift shop. \nA limited number of climbers (max of 7) are allowed at one time. There will be a time limit for viewing from the top. Guests who would like a more leisurely climbing experience are welcome to enjoy one of the daytime climbs available every Wednesday through Sunday. Masks are welcome but not required.
